2.2 Relevant Theories of Teachers’ Professional Development
In searching for a theoretical fram ework for answering the key ques tions of this study, Vygotsky’s Social-cultural Theory is referred to. It provides a useful theoretical foundation to help the researcher understand the complex developmental process of knowledge, reflection, and practice in teachers’ social contexts. In Vygotsky’s view, all learning and developments of human are realized in practices and activities. He also puts forward that various tools mediate purposeful actions. In addition, the most important tool is language, because it is a kind of semiotic system, which is the basis of human intelligence (Hallid ay, 1993; V ygotsky, 1978). Because of the social p roperty of human beings, their co gnitive development is a socially mediated activity. For language teachers, this means that th ey teach and le arn language in so cial contexts, and their developments are socialization processes. T eachers’ practices determine the r eflective conditions and content. Those activities in turn become tools to help teachers think about what they and others are doing in an activity. What more, those activities also make foundations for the development of more complex and creative activities (Hall, 2000). In addition, Vygotsky’s Social-cultural Theory emphasizes the naturalization of all social activities in which meaning is constructed in a historical and cultural relevant way (Gu Peiya, 2009). To summarize, the researcher thinks that Vygotsky’s Social-cultural T heory provides important insights into the teacher professi onal development process. It helps trace how teachers realize the way they do, how they comb ine their practice with theory. This theory also can help explain why teachers’ make such teaching activities and methods. It also m akes up the core of this study’s conceptual framework, which are used as the basic analytic theory in the later data analysis.
