Chapter 4 Results and discussion

In order to answer the research questions brought up in chapter two, datacollected from the three questionnaires have been interpreted with the aid of SPSSsoftware. The interview is inserted in this chapter . The results of the research aredivided into three sections. Section one includes the data analysis of the current levelof teacher immediacy of Eng lish teacher in middle school. Section two is to analyzerelationship between teacher imm ediacy and students' interests on learning Englishand to present the relationship between teacher immediacy and student engagement inEnglish class. Section three focuses on the results of the interviews of the six students.Section four is about the discussion on the research results.

4.1 Description of t he Current Level of T heir TeachersImmediacy

In this thesis, teacher immedi acy refers to a series of behaviors, which reducespsychological and/or physical distance between teachers and students and includesinstructional immediacy, relational immediacy, verbal immediacy , personalimmediacy and nonverbal imm ediacy. The author gets 460 pieces of students'evaluation of teachers' immediacy. In this study, the alpha reliability scale for teacherimmediacy was .961.Teacher immediacy was operationalized using Middle School English TeacherImmediacy of 27-item. Score 1 equals 'tota lly disagree' and scor e 5 equals 'totallyagree'. That is to say , the higher the mean score is, the higher the degree of teacherimmediacy will be. This thesis d eals with the current level of the English teache rimmediacy in middle school English from five aspects, which are the instructionalimmediacy, relational immediacy , verbal immediacy, personal immediacy andnonverbal immediacy. Generally speaking, most students have positive evaluations oftheir teachers' immediacy because the m ean score for the five parts is 4.13, whichmeans the average students' attitudes ar e between 'agree' and 'strongly agree'.Among the five aspects, nonverbal immediacy gets the highest score, w hose meanscore is 4.25. The mean score of relational immediacy is 3.98, which is the lowest.
