Is economic growth good for society?
Economic growth is always what politicians want to achieve during their short-term services. They always want to submit a good sheet of paper to the world and also to their enemies showing that they are leading the society to a prospective path with exact number showing the annual growth rate of GDP, surplus, stock market growth as well as an increase in average household salaries.
However, hard number cannot speaks for everything. Pollution and high rate of social pressure are the prime issues brought by a fast growing economy. For example, China has invested large amounts of resources to build up their manufacturing industries as well as real estate in the past 30 years, which yielded them great economic growth together with deteriorated environment in all major cities. China's GDP has increased from $961.73 million in 1983 to $83761 million in 2012 (The Analysis of China’s Economic Growth, 2012), almost triple the number each year. On the contrary, the API in Beijing and other three cities in the Pearl River Delta has increased almost four times during the three decades.(China National Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center, 1990 - 2010) A deteriorated environment would result in higher rate of disease, decreased output of farm and increased government subsidies to control the environment pollution in the long term. Actually, China have already began to suffer from these consequences. Beijing's sand storm has caused the local government tons of millions of dollars annually to deal with the environment. And there are a series of negative economic effects to be counted such as increased cost for using farming lands.
The pressure brought from the burdens shouldered by each household for the fast-growing economy has been brought as a serious issue in recent years. Take China and Indian as an example, a large amount of social elites or even important politicians in these two countries have decided to immigrant to western countries to seek a slower and more peaceful working life due to the great pressure brought by their home country's economy as well as underdeveloped social warfare system. A fast growing economy might whirl very fast and attract new technologies and investments but could also lose social elites and talents at same time.
In addition, a fast growing economy doesn't guarantee a stable and peaceful society. The criminal rate has also been souring during the past three decades especially in large cities like Beijing and Shanghai. The number indicates that a fast growing economy has increased the gap between the rich and the poor and actually leaving a lot of people behind under poverty line and thus forcing them to struggle and even doing bad things. For example, in China's economic structure, the fast growth is mostly driven by manufacturing industries as well as the bubbles in real estate. These growth has make a lot of investors with large amount of money millionaires but didn't leave more chances for poor people who neither have good education to make a living nor have large amount of money to make investment. Thus, the fast growing economy in China has actually created more problems such as inequities in social resour
