Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Researches on Foreign Language Teachers' Role
Since the second half of the 19 Century,the wave of reform in foreign languageteaching field rose and teaching schools changed constantly. Foreign language teaching andresearch was developing at an unprecedented pace. From emphasizing “teaching” tofocusing on “learning”,and from paying close attention to “teaching content and methods”to attaching importance to "students' conscious participation and their autonomous abilities",the change of teaching concept led to the change of teachers' roles. Teachers are regarded notonly as holders and providers of foreign language knowledge, but also as assistants ofpromoting students' communicative competence. Analyzing the evolution and characteristicsof teachers' roles in foreign language teaching is beneficial to the more profound, more sober,and more comprehensive understanding of the nature of foreign language teaching.

2.2 Researches on College English Teachers' Role
From the birth of the modem European universities, every great reform of highereducation would be accompanied by the change and the development of college teachers.After the end of Second World War, the “golden age" of the development of higher educationin Europe and the United States gradually faded. In order to seek the new opportunity for thedevelopment of higher education, the researches on college teachers revived. But these wereonly the researches on the roles of general college English teachers, and the real researcheson the roles of college English teachers were small in number. In the 1970s, the researches on the roles of English teachers began to appear. At thattime, the teaching took teachers as the center, and the role of English teachers was theorganizer of the classroom. Teachers emphasized the input of theoretical knowledge insteadof practical application and they enjoyed the absolute authority in the classroom. In theperiod from 1970s to 1980s,people have made a lot of researches on English teachingmaterials,teaching methods, testing and students, but there were a few researches on theroles of English teachers. Harmer (1991) was one of the earlier researchers who studied theroles of English teachers. He believed that the roles of English teachers were promotersand consultants, and meanwhile, he raised the concept of “students’ autonomous learning”.Certainly, he believed that the autonomous learning was not the learning without teachers'participation. Therefore,the role of teachers was not weakened but enhanced. Since then,English teaching has gradually changed from teacher-centered mode to student-centeredmode,so the role of English teachers has a new meaning.
