Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Overview of Multimodal Discourse Analysis
Multimodality emerges with the dramatic development of computer science andinternet. Since 1952 Harris proposed discourse analysis, a great number of researcheshave been done on several aspects of language such as conversational analysis, genre,coherent of discourse and etc. Thanks to the notion of discourse analysis, multimodaldiscourse analysis could be developed with the integration of semiotic resources incommunication in recent years.In order to fully understand multimodal discourse analysis, first of all, thedefinition of multimodality needs to be introduced.With the arrival of internet age, the ways of interaction and communicationbetween people have been enriched. Language is probably the best understood andinformative semiotic so far. The multimodality means the ways of humancommunication are diversified.Multimodality (Kress, Jewitt, Ogborn, & Tsatsarelis, 2001; Kress & vanLeeuwen, 2001), has emerged with the rapid development of computer science andsocial communication. Nowadays, the integration of language, image, sound, video,and gesture are widely used in human communication. Monomodal discourse analysisis not enough to fully express or understand the meaning. Therefore, multimodalityemerges and has become a hot research field. Multimodality has attracted muchinterest in recent years and has been applied in the area such as
advertising, film,textbook, newspaper, of course linguistic research.

2.2 Previous Studies
In this section, the related research abroad and at home is reviewed. With afoundation of previous researches, this
thesis is able to develop.The multimodal discourse analysis first starts abroad. This section reviews therelated research abroad. With time going by, discourse analysis makes great progress and then multimodal discourse analysis begins to draw researchers’ attention.Since 1990s, the multimodal transaction of functional linguistics and discourseanalysis has made multimodal discourse analysis a hot discussion.The multimodality approach has generated much interest in recent years.Through the above section, it is well acknowledged that multimodality is an approachused to understand the contribution of various semiotic resources in the studies ofcommunication and meaning construction.Regarding to the research area, multimodal discourse analysis have been widelyapplied in various multimodal texts such as textbooks, advertisements, news, posters,and magazine covers. These are two dimensional static discourses. In recent years,three dimensional and dynamic discourses begin to attract more attention. Researchershave began to pay attention to film analysis, website design, classroom discourse,public speech and situated discourse from the
