1.2 Purpose of the Research
A large amount of studies have been done to explore effects of application of rubric-based assessment in the writing teaching both abroad and at home. However, there are a small number of studies on the empirical study about the effects of rubric-based assessment. Therefore, the application of rubric-based assessment in writing teaching in the present study has three specific purposes. Firstly, this study aims to explore whether application of rubric-based assessment can improve students’ writing performance. Secondly, this study aims to find out which aspect (content, organization, language use, vocabulary and mechanics) has been improved most after the application of rubric-based assessment. Thirdly, the current study was conducted to explore students’ attitudes towards the application of rubric-based assessment in writing by analyzing some questionnaires. The findings of the current study might provide college English teachers with some suggestions including methods of assessment and on which aspects they should focus on when they assess or evaluate students’ compositions.

Chapter Two Literature Review
This chapter consists of two sections. In the first section, the author introduces the rubric. In the second section, the author concludes literatures about writing rubrics abroad and at home. In the third section, the author reviews related researches on rubric-based assessment abroad and at home.
2.1 Rubric
Rubric, as a new-style assessment tool, has a rapid development in recent years. And it has become an effective assessment tool in assessing language teaching. The study of rubrics abroad develops with the development of performance assessment and authentic assessment. Rubrics have become popular with teachers and researchers abroad because of clear assessment standards and detailed descriptions of students’ work.
