Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the research
Writing as an important part which is one of the four fundamental skills of Englishproficiency plays an increasingly important role in English teaching. In English teaching,according to the Oxford Dictionary, writing has two implications: 1) writing is somethingthat has been written or printed, namely, the handwriting; 2) the expression in writing,namely, the ability to observe and analyze the object or the topic, it is also called thecognitive competence in written form. The writing ability is a comprehensive ability toshow the student’s cognitive level and ability of expression, so in this
thesis focus on thesecond meaning of writing, student’s writing ability. Raimes (1983) proposed that writingin college teaching of writing has two functions: writing for improving languageproficiency; and writing for writing, it is undoubtedly that the first function that is what theteaching of writing in college really needs to teach student.However, the current situation of writing teaching in college is not consistent with thefirst one. In the traditional teaching of writing, teachers help students to understand thetopic of writing by analyzing some model compositions, paying more attention to theorganization and structures of composition, the grammar and the collocations of verb ineach sentence and the form and the accuracy of the vocabulary before they assign thehomework. After students hand in their composition, what they care about was just thescores, rather than the feedback from their teachers, including the correction their teachersmade. If things continue this way, students will be tired of writing because of its lowefficiency to improve the student’s writing ability and make teachers overloaded in theirworkload. Thus it is time for teachers to find some feasible and high-efficiency methods toimprove students’ writing ability to change the current situation of teaching of writing incollege sequentially.

1.2 The current situation of college English writing teaching
In fact, to cultivate the students’ English communicative competence is to develop thestudents’ mastery ability of four basic skills of English, namely the listening, speaking,reading and writing. According to the cognitive theory, listening and reading belong to theinformation input, while speaking and writing is the scope of information output in thelanguage teaching, and to foster writing ability is the key point to develop another threeskills. Ding Wangdao pointed out that writing plays a special significant role in Englishlearning. Besides, writing, which takes a great proportion up to 15 percent, is also animportant part in the TEM-4 and TEM-8, hence the importance of writing. Unfortunately,English writing teaching is still the vulnerable spot.Although more and more teachers and students have released the importance ofwriting, writing teaching, especially in the way of teaching, has no made much progressyet in the past years. The general procedure is that teachers first help students to analyzethe organization of the modal composition, the structure of the sentence, the accuracy ofthe grammar and vocabulary, and afterwards, assign students the writing homework. In thisprocess, the analyzing or the teaching is controlled by the teachers, students do not takepart in this process any more so students are not able to solve the problem about what towrite and how to
