So how to efficiently improve students’ writing ability has become an important research focus for many teachers in writing teaching. This
thesis reviews previous studies on writing teaching. There are varieties of areas in EFL writing researches. Some researchers (Tang, 2011; Wang, 2007; Chen, 2013) study writing with other language skills such as listening, reading, translation, etc. But few researchers combine speaking and writing from the perspective of memetics. Imitation, the core of memetics, can be used in writing teaching. Language memes can be replicated and spread through imitation. Imitation is not a mechanical copy but the foundation of innovation. When imitation reaches a certain level, the innovation becomes possible. Cultivating students’ faculties to innovate on the basis of imitation is a significant part in writing teaching. So how to enable students to learn the language memes, imitate and spread them is an important point. That is to say, the teacher should instruct students to build up their own language memes library which can be used in practical writing. Based on the memetics, the author builds up a model for EFL writing teaching:

Chapter Two Literature Review
This chapter reviews the previous studies on English writing and attempts to summarize the major findings of the previous studies as well as the advantages and disadvantages of previous studies. Meanwhile, studies about memetics both at home and abroad are also reviewed in this chapter.
2.1 Studies on EFL Writing
At present, the researches on EFL writing cover five aspects: writing teaching, feedback, writing assessment, text analysis and affecting factors in writing teaching. The author reviews the related literature from these five perspectives respectively. Previous studies on writing teaching are mainly from three aspects: studies on the introduction of linguistic theories into writing, studies on specific methods and techniques, and studies on writing teaching materials. Development of linguistics gives researchers new angle to explore EFL writing teaching. Chen (2008) explores college English writing teaching from the perspective of memetics. By analyzing two kinds of memes, that is genotype and phenotype as well as their replication, Chen (2008) applies these two types of memes in college English writing to enrich students’ vocabulary. Lv (2009) investigates the application of patterns of thematic progression in English writing teaching.
