For example, within liberal ideology, we can allow that there are discourses relating to
identity, nation, and reason that give linguistic and cultural shape to liberalism. Discourses,
in other words, can be seen as significant constituent elements of the overarching
phenomenon that is ideology. Ideology does not control discourses entirely; but discourses
themselves take their general shape and direction from ideology’s premises. Thus, it
becomes difficult to articulate ideas in a particular discourse—for example, how we talk
about the nature of work or gender—that are fundamentally different from the parameters
