While this can affect what people do, it doesn’t impact people’s mindsets. In fact, it’s counterproductive to manage people in the same way as managing business processes.


Thus, managing personnel in businesses need to adjust the internal system and rules along with the adoption of new technology. For example, in order to drive more business from lower-cost channels such as the Web, a business may need to change its reward system by giving commissions to sale people by giving commission for repeat orders coming in over the Web. Another example, a business added a new call center service. If a potential customer got information and introduction concerning a certain product through sales person A at call center and then orders this product from sales person B directly, both A and B should get part of the commission. If the business does not change its reward system to meet the requirement of the new technology, maybe all the commission goes to B. I have every reason to believe that A will not cooperate with the other sales people in the future despite the available technology and skills.


The right technology

The question is: With dozens of data replication products to choose from, how does a business choose the right technology to match to its particular business need?


The answer lies in first understanding the different types of technologies available and their strengths and weaknesses. Then second, know what it is you are trying to accomplish, so that you can match the right technology to the business need. Finally, decide if you can afford the technology you have chosen. For example, are you looking to data replication to provide a mirror of your data for business continuance? If so, how long can your application afford to be out of service? Seconds, minutes or hours? If seconds, then be prepared to pay the maximum amount, as the technologies are usually tied to storage hardware. If you can afford recovery times of minutes or hours, then your choices widen, allowing your IT dollars to go farther.
