Some comments show that beauty contest is a work of art for displaying the ideal of female beauty and their physical attractiveness. However, some people think that it is a commercial activity and is promoting the desire of beauty to female audiences. Therefore, beauty contest is criticized for commercializing women. The young women in beauty contests are also thought as the plaything of men and used for ornament. To think conversely, can we say that the sexual identity of men and women has exchanged in the beauty contest for young men? Do women oppress men and damage their masculinity in the beauty contest for young men? In Hong Kong, beauty contest for young men is a new topic on television reality shows. This kind of beauty contests started in 2005 and held by local television broadcasts limited. Some of the people think that the beauty contest is a competition of male’s bodybuilding, but actually it work as same as beauty contest for women. All the participators need to finish a talent show and shownudity. Finally, the female judges will select the winner. During studying this topic, many interviewees thought that the beauty contest for young men is unacceptable and that kind of campaigns will destroy masculinity. This kind of thinking can be understood as the effect of patriarchy and the audiences were used to think about questions from male standpoint.On the other hand, a contradictive and conflict perceptionhas showed among the interviewees. Most of the interviewees agree that the beauty contest for young men is interesting and it can provide new concept of sexual identity to the audiences. At the same time, they also think the behaviors of the participators in the beauty contest for men are decreasing masculinity and males esteem. To large extent, this contradiction is because of the influence from feminism and post-feminism. Female audiences thought that they can do as same as men. Putting heterosexualityto the playthings role might have a special meaning (as powerful as men) to female audiences, but they also want to keep the empowerment of female (gain appreciation from their beautiful appearance and body). They thought as a post-feminist but support some feminism thinking at the same time that’s why they get stuck in the contradiction. This article will go to analyze and discuss the question of masculinity and the contradictive of audience perceptions in beauty contest for young men.
