e. Xu Yulong (1992)gives us a definition of contrastive linguistic. He claims that Contrastive Linguisticsis a branch of linguistics and its task is to describe and compare two or morelanguages of their similarities and differences, especially differences, and apply theseresults to related fields. Wang Huang’s (1986) three problems in the process ofcomparison and Liu Miqing’s (1991) three dimensions in the first language transferframework, both are the significant guidances in the comparison between Chineseand foreign languages. Pan Guowen in 1995, talked about the philosophic basis ofthe language comparison as well as the relation between language comparison andthinking, which raises language comparison to a higher level.

Chapter Five Results and Discussion

Based on the contrastive analysis of learners’ written output of adverbial clause,this chapter will define different transfer errors and their types in the output andpresent the ratio of transfer errors in each adverbial clause. Then, the results of thecomparison of transfer errors of learners with different English proficiency will bepresented. Finally, the results will be discussed.

5.1 Transfer Errors in Chinese EFL Learners’ Written Output

Based on the description of Chinese and English adverbial clause, a contrastiveanalysis of learners’ output will be made in terms of form, meaning and distribution.Meanwhile, according to the definition of negative transfer, this section will showsome types of transfer errors, which are made by negative transfer and in whichsome trace of native language can be seen. Then it categorizes transfer errors intodifferent types through contrastive analysis. Because transfer errors are only found inlearners’ written output in adverbial clauses of time, reason, condition, result,concession and purpose, this thesis only discusses the six adverbial clausesillustrated above. The main transfer errors occurred in learners’ output can bedivided into five groups: Independence Sentence, Conjunction Error, SubjectOmission, Collocation Error and Conjunction Omission. Each group will beanalyzed in a detailed way.

Conclusion

Based on the results and analysis of data presented in the last chapter,conclusions such as major findings of research, the implications of teaching,limitations of the study and suggestions for further study will be discussed in thischapter.This study attempts to explore the transfer errors made by Chinese EFL learnersin adverbial clauses and seek the relation between the rate of different transfer errortypes and learners of different English proficiency.
