Chapter One Introduction


Chapter one briefly introduces the background of the study as well as the purposeand significance of this thesis. Besides, it also includes the introduction of the structureof this thesis.

1.1 Background of the study
Firstly,test acts an important role in the teaching process. A successful test can notonly check students' study efficiency, but also help teachers identify the problemsexisting in teaching activities so as to perfect their teaching methods. It is also animportant means of evaluating teachers' teaching quality. Therefore, in recent year,many experts did a lot of researches on the usefulness of tests. Among these researches,Most of them are concerned with the reading comprehension test, because reading is animportant way of getting information. Moreover, the testing of reading comprehensionusually takes up a rather large portion in most English tests.Besides, as an English teacher of reading course in college, the writer is oftenpuzzled by a very strange phenomenon that a large number of students who performwell in the final reading test (FRT for short) may get lower score in the reading part ofCollege English Test Band 4 (CET-4 for short, which is a nationwide English test andcan be considered as a criterion test) than the students who perform badly in FRT.Through many researches, the writer found that there are many reasons for thisphenomenon. For example, the type of FRT and CET-4 are different. FRT is anachievement test, while CET-4 is a proficiency test. In addition, the test environment,the psychological condition of test takers, etc. are also different. However, in theprocess of the research, especially after the analysis of the FRT papers of recent years insome colleges, the writer found that the main reason is not the factors mentioned abovebut the low reliability and validity of FRT. Moreover, in most FRT, students' languagecompetence is not checked. For example, some test designers of FRT just copy theexercise items as the question items in test paper for high content validity so that sometest takers can arrive at the correct only through the memorization of the answers inexercises. Therefore, if test designer can develop a FRT paper which is not only highlyreliable and valid, but also in some extent can reflect the student's reading competence, students will benefit a lot.

1.2 Target of the research
The writer is a teacher in Yucai College affiliated to Southwest University (YucaiCollege for short),which is an independent college. In the English department of YucaiCollege, the major courses of the first year students include comprehensive English,reading course, oral production, pronunciation course, and listening course. The writeris the teacher of reading course for the whole 10 classes in the first grade. Thus,the FRTmentioned in this thesis refers to the first-year students. The total number of students is320.
