1.1 Background of Research
1.1.1 The Importance of English Writing
Writing is the most difficult and important skill among the four basic skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) in the process of learning a foreign language. Writing is also the most powerful way of recording thoughts or ideas.On the one hand, English writing is the most integrated skill, for it is a complexand systematic project rather than a simple process which just groups proper wordstogether. According to Nunan (2001: 271), producing a piece of writing that is fluent,coherent and idiomatic is probably the most difficult thing in learning a language. So it is not an easy task for Chinese learners of English to improve their English writing ability,as it calls for the internalization of the knowledge they have already acquired as well ascreative production of them. On the other hand, we should be aware of the importance of writing in the process of improving English, because only those who are skilled in writing can be thought as qualified learners. Besides, for Chinese students, standardized tests are the most widely accepted methods to evaluate their academic achievements. InChina, writing serves as an important part of many English Standardized Tests, such asCollege English Test (CET), Test for English Majors (TEM). Among these tests, writing accounts for nearly 20 percent of the total score, that is to say, students with a higher writing ability will stand a good chance of achieving academic success, so English writing is very important for Chinese learners of English in their college English education.

1.1.1英语写作的重要性
写作是最困难和最重要的技能，在学习外语的过程中的四项基本技能（听，说，读，写）之间。写作是最有力的方式记录的想法或观念。一方面，英语写作是最完整的技能，它是一个复杂的系统工程，而不是一个简单的过程，这组合适的词放在一起。据努南（2001：271），制作了一块写通顺，前后连贯和习惯可能是最困难的事情，在学习一门语言。因此，它是中国英语学习者提高英语写作能力，不是一件容易的事，因为它的内在要求已经获得他们的知识以及创意制作。另一方面，我们应该知道在这个过程中提高英语写作的重要性，因为只有那些谁是熟练的写作可以被认为是合格的学习者。此外，对于中国学生来说，标准化考试是最被广泛接受的方法来评价他们的学术成果。在中国，写作作为一个重要组成部分，许多英语标准化考试，如大学英语四级考试（CET），英语专业（TEM）测试。在这些测试中，写作占近20％的总成绩，也就是说，具有较高的写作能力的学生将站在一个很好的机会实现学业上的成功，所以英语写作是非常重要的中国英语学习者在他们的大学英语教育。

1.1.2 Problems in English Writings and Their Possible Causes
As a productive skill, writing has aroused much interest among English teachers aswell as education researchers. Considering the importance of writing, many studies onEnglish writing have been conducted in China since the 1980s.It has been noted by most English teachers in China that there are many problemsexisting in college students’ writing performance, for instance, the improper use of vocabulary, lack of coherence. Though various teaching methods have been applied todeal with those problems, the situation is disappointing and even frustrating. Manyproblems can still be found in students’ writing. The most obvious one is that the studentshave put a great deal of time and effort into the memorization of enormous words andgrammar, yet their language use was poor. In consequence, their compositions alwaysread weird and are far from idiomatic although they are grammatically correct. They failto put words and grammars together appropriately enough to make their expressionsidiomatic.Among those problems, some problems have attracted the attention of theresearchers, but an important problem has been neglected up to now, that is, the use ofchunks.
