Met hods  An investigationwas carried out with questionnaires and interviews , which involved student s , teachers , textbooks , teaching method2ology , etc. The first2hand information was collected and analyzed.  Results  Teachers , textbooks , teaching meth2odology and other aspect s in ESP teaching could not meet the requirement of the student s. In QUMC , t he ESP teaching is divided intotwo successive part s ———scientific English in thet hird year and subject2based English in the fourt hyear , and t he course for each semester last s 15weeks with two hours per week. The scientificEnglish text book and examinations are determinedby Foreign Languages Department . A teacher f romt he department , who has an education backgroundof medical English , is in charge of t he ESP tea2ching for t he junior s. All t he ot her ESP teacher sare f rom ot her department s , such as department sof p hysiology , p harmacology , microbiology , andhuman anatomy. We now have regular guidanceand reference books available on how to teach thecour se. However , t he student s go to teaching hos2pital s in t heir fourt h college year , and t he subse2quent part 2subject2based English is quite differentand flexible in that all t he concerned factor s , inclu2ding t he text books , t he examinations and teachingmet hodology , are completely decided by ESPteacher s themselves , most of them are clinicians invarious teaching hospitals.

The present st udy isfocused on t he ESP teaching for t he junior s.For a long time , ESP teaching has been aweak point at t he tertiary level of education in Chi2na. The English level s of quite a number ofstudent s drop to some extent despite t he time andenergy exerted af ter t hey pass CET24/ 6. It is diffi2cult for t hem to use English at work af ter gradua2tion. For example , some graduates are unable toread English literat ure of t heir own fields , not tomention writing research paper s in English. Whydo st udent s who have obtained t he certificate ofCET24/ 6 and received two year sp ESP teaching stilllack t he required abilities to use English ?In order to investigate t he existing conditionsand problems in current ESP teaching , especiallyin medical colleges , a study was carried out inQUMC , aiming to improve the ESP teaching in va2rious aspect s.1  

SUBJECTS AND METHODSThe subject s of t he investigation included 449junior st udent s f rom Grade 2000 , who had diffe2rent majors such as medicine , medical imaging ,medical laboratory , stomatology , and nursing , andsix ESP teacher s , who belong to different depart2ment s.The investigations were in the form of ques2tionnaires and interviews , focusing on t he follow2ing issues : at tit udes to ESP , ESP text book , ESPteacher , teaching met hodology , and st udent sp in2terest s in ESP. The questionnaires dist ributed tot he st udent s contained 20 questions , in whichQuestion 20 was an open question , all in Chinese , for t he sake of t heir exact understanding and coop2eration.
