ABSTRACT
This dissertation aims at studying and hopefully establishing, at least tentatively, the classroom roles of Native English-speaking Teachers (NESTs). To support the establishment of the classroom roles, a case study was carried out into the current roles of Clair Welsman ①, an American teacher at UNCE University ② in Shanghai, China; students’ expectations of their代写教育类留学生essay teachers; the correlations between the teacher’s roles and the students’ expectations; and the difficulties influencing Clair’s teaching practice. In addition, a questionnaire survey and classroom observations were also carried out among the English majors at UNCE University.
The findings are 1) The six roles investigated which the native-teacher subject currently plays, in order of overall means, are creator of environment, lecturer, affection regulator, facilitator and motivator, which might possibly reflect the dominant roles which NESTs play in the classroom in China. 2) Generally speaking, the current roles of Clair as observed and surveyed mostly matched students’ expectations, and the role of lecturer was the last to be expected by the student subjects, which may reflect the slight gap between the roles the teacher plays and the students’ expectations. 3) Even though NESTs have their own advantages, there still exist many difficulties that may influence their teaching practice, and the solutions remain to be further discussed.
Although there was no big gap between the teacher’s roles and the students’ expectations identified in this case study, suitable ways of implementing the appropriate roles still need to be proposed. The suggested solutions are teachers’ transformation of Educational beliefs, in-service training on education theories, SLA theories, refreshing of knowledge on a regular basis in order to motivate students and increase teaching and learning effect, training of students learning strategies, and helping students to set up proper learning goals and attitudes.
