position remains constant regardless of whether one affirms, negates, or questions the main clause,
then the predicate of the main clause is factive.) ( p387 from An English Grammar Course for ESL
Teacher by Marianne Celce-Murcia and Diane Larsen- Freeman 1980)。例如:
John regrets that he told you that lie.
John doesn’ t regret that he told you that lie.
Does John regret that he told you that lie?
She agreed that she would come tonight
She didn’ t agree that she would come tonight.
Did she agree that she would come tonight?
I’ d appreciate your being able to do me a favor.
I’ d not appreciate your being able to do me a favor.
Would you appreciate my being able to do you a favor?
I am considering going to Canada this summer.
He proceeded to tell the lie.
He didn’ t proceed to tell the lie.
Did he proceed to tell the lie?
She avoided meeting Smith.
(implies she didn’ t meet Smith)
Helen didn’ t forget locking the door.
(implies she remembered locking the door)
I wanted to go to Europe.
(does not imply I went to Europe)
He threatened to kill her.
(does not imply he killed her)
蓄性动词” ( the majority of verbs taking infinitive complements are not implicative) (p388 from <An English Grammar Course for ESL Teachers> by Marianne Celce -Murcia and Diane Larsen- Free-man)。
Mary managed to pass the test.
(implies Mary passed the test)
She failed to complete her task.
(implies she didn’ t complete her task)
He recommended firing Smith.
(does not necessarily implies Smith was fired)
We all suggested starting earlier.
(does not necessarily implies we started earlier)
