Abstract: Foreign trade English emerges as an important aspect of English use as China adopts a more internationally-oriented economic strategy.
This thesis studies the use of conditional sentences in foreign trade English. It is hoped that some new perspectives can be revealed as to the functions of such clauses.
I. Conditional sentence; previous research.
In China, some people have already done 本英语毕业论文英语论文网www.51lunwen.org整理提供research on conditional sentences. Zhang (2004.6) and Bo(2007.2) are the most famous . Now let’s look at these people’s research.
Zhang’s conditional sentence is a complex sentence constituted by “the condition adverb clause + principal clause”. It can be divided into four kinds.
Type I is real conditional sentences , The mean of “IF” is similar with“whenever” . For example:
1. If you heat ice, it melts.
2. you pour oil on water, it floats
3. If the temperature drops to 0 degrees Centigrade, water freezes
4.If I make a promise, I would keep it
5. If I was hungry ,I usually had a full meal
6. If it rained , I went to work by car.
Type II is related to real conditional sentence too. It is most commonly used in English. It can be divided into “the fundamental mode” “the variant form” and “the replacement form”. For instance:
7. If we catch the 10 o’clock train, we shall(will, can, may)get there by lunch-time.
8. It is fine tomorrow, we can have a picnic sometime.
9. If you wake up before me, give me a call.
10. If it should rain again ,the flowers will bloom.
11. If you should fail to come ask Philip to work in his place.
12. If you should be passing my house, you might return the book you borrowed.
13. If you will reserve seats, we shall be sure of a comfortable journey.
14. Set your alarm clock, and you won’t oversleep.=If you set your alarm clock, you won’t…
15. If it’s ready, he will bring it tomorrow.
Type III is Unreal conditional sentence. “Unreal conditional sentence” contains varying degrees in semantics equivalent to “the non-authenticity”. This type of conditional sentence can also be divided into the fundamental mode and the variant form. For example:
16. If I come into a fortune, I would give up working.
17. If I knew how it worked, I could tell you what to do.
18. If you asked me tomorrow, I would be able to give you the answer.
19. If we were to miss the 10o’clork train , we wouldn’t get there till after lunch.
Type IV presents a contrast with the past in that the fact is in unreal conditions. This kind of sentence pattern can also be divided the fundamental and variant forms. Consider the following:
If we had caught the 10 o’clock train , we would have got

20. there by lunch time.We would have called you if we had known your telephone number.
21. If he had wanted to dance, I’d have taken him to a discotheque.
22. If you were to have asked me , I would have been only too willing to help.
23. If you were to have explained your problem to me, I would have been able to help you.
Bo(2007.2) also studies conditional sentence, which can be divided into real and the unreal.
a. Real conditional sentence – it expresses the supposition that is possibly occurs or can be realized, in the sentences the subordinate clause and the principal clause are used for giving a straightforward account. For instance:
25 .Oil floats if you pour it on water.
26. If I have enough money论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
