Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 The Related Items
This research intends to analyze Northeastern English learners’ intonational features, thus, this part will elaborate the definition of key items in this thesis. In its broad sense, Northeastern China, as a large geographical zone, includes Jilin province, Liaoning province, Heilongjiang province and the eastern region of Inner Mongolia. But in its narrow sense, it only means the region that includes the Jilin province, Liaoning province and Heilongjiang province. Dialect is a regional variety of a formal language, thus the Northeastern dialect should be regard as one regional variety of Mandarin (Yang, 2014). According to Dictionary of Chinese Dialect, “the Northeastern dialect is defined as a dialectal variety which is formed on the basis of Shandong dialect, Hebei dialect and prevalent in Heilongjiang province, Jilin province and Liaoning province as well as some banners of Inner Mongolia” (Dong, 1996: 111). Thus, this paper chooses the English learners from Heilongjiang province, Jilin province and Liaoning province as the research subjects to be compared with native speakers.

2.2 The Previous Studies of Intonation
This part will review the previous literatures of intonation from two aspects: native speakers and non-native speakers, which is helpful to make clear the research actuality of intonation at home and abroad. The relevant studies of native speakers’ intonation can date back to the middle of the sixteenth century, and it is Sweet who initiated the studies of modern English intonation. After that, the studies of intonation have developed rapidly. And in the early part of the twentieth century, it entered a boom period.
