Chapter Five Analysis of the Intonational Features  

This  chapter  intends  to  answer  the  three  research  questions,  present  the intonational  features  of  statements  produced  by  Northeastern  English  learners,  and reveal  the  nuanced  intonational  differences  of  Northeastern  English  learners  by compared with native speakers. 

5.1The Features of Intonational Phrases 

Phrase  segmentation  is  a  very  important  term  which  reflects  the  speaker’s perception  of  intended  information  and  has  an  important  impact  on  the  hearer’s reception  of  the  information.  In  order  to  reveal  the  differences  of  phrase segmentation  between  Northeastern  English  learners  and  native  speakers,  this  part will  focus  on  analyzing  the  distribution  of  IPs  and  the  features  of  four  acoustic markers of IPs.   In order to have a better understanding of the distinctive features of intonational phrases between native speakers and Northeastern English learners, we should study the total number of IPs of each research group. Table 5.1 presents the total number of IPs of native speakers and Northeastern English learners when they read the research materials, including the sentences of broad focus and narrow focus.
