1.1 Research background

Penfield, the neural psychologist of the United States, put forward"white board" theory in 1959. He considered that the baby is born with fixed function incertain areas of the brain cortex, and has a cortex finally used for language and feelingfunction, which can use the blank area to learn a language in early time, and severallanguages can easily be acquired. Also he thought that 4-8 years old is the optimum age forstarting to learn a foreign language. After 1967, Lenneberg, the psychological linguists,developed this view. He put forward the famous idea of the Critical Period Hypothesis:natural language acquisition can only occur in the critical period, i.e., from two-year-old toage of adolescence. The Critical Period Hypothesis in second language acquisition fieldsaw countless researches and debates including supports and oppositions to the argument.

At the end of the decade, thedebate reached its climax and the study experienced the significant breakthrough.Krashen(1979), published articles, who distinguished "initial rate" and "the ultimate level"for the first time. The article points out that, although adult learners have advantages inacquisition of words and syntax, initially faster, the study results show that it is a negativerelated between the end of the second language level and the age. Since 1980s, the debateof Critical Period Hypothesis is discussed from advantages for children learning thelanguage to explore reasons of this phenomenon. In 1996, the international association forapplied linguistics was held in Finland entitled "the critical period of second languageacquisition research from a new angle". David Birdsong, the second language acquisitionexpert of the United States, was under the chairmanship of this academic seminar. Hepublished "the Second Language Acquisition and the Critical Period Hypothesis" in 1999,which reflects the new research findings. However, whether there is a critical period forlearning a foreign language is still a controversial issue.


1.2 Related researches at home and broad
After the Second World War, the worldwide formed the boom of "learning foreignlanguage from primary school". In 1954, the Modern Language Association officiallyproposed suggestions for primary school to teach foreign language in the United States.Then, Europe, Asia, Africa also tried teaching foreign language in elementary school.
