摘要:This study firstly aims to sum up the types of critical incidents whichpre-service English teachers encounter in their teaching practicum, thento explore the effects of these critical incidents on per-service Englishteachers' development.

Introduction


This chapter provides an overview of this study. Firstly it introducesthe background of this research. Secondly, the purposes, theoretical andpractical significance of this study are performed. At last, the layout ofthis thesis is simply presented.

0.1 Background of the Research
Education plays a great role in a country's development. Whether acountry can be successful or not depends on education and teachers. Rosa(2001) declares that the ups and downs of a country depend on teachers inthis country as well as what teachers can do. Teachers are the significantpower for educational reform and the key factor for the success of reform(Stenhouse, 1975). In a word, education depends on teachers and thequality of education depends on the quality of teachers.

In 1966, United Nations Educational, Scientific, and CulturalOrganization (UNESCO) and International Labor Organization (ILO)announced in "Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers" thatteaching should be regarded as a profession which enjoys the same rightsand responsibilities with other professions (Ye Lan, 2001). Sine then, thethought of teaching as a profession has been popularized. Later, the WorldEducation Yearbook took "teachers' professional development" as thesubject in 1980. From then on, teachers' professional development hasattracted great attention and many significant articles and reports aboutthis topic have been published, For example, American Carnegie Groupand the Renaissance Group delivered two reports respectively in 1980s,which pointed out that teachers' teaching quality can be improved untilteachers' professional development is improved (Gu Mingyuan, 2004). Inaddition, in order to satisfy the need of our country's development, theNew Curriculum has been implemented to urge teachers to developthemselves because whether a curriculum can be implementedsuccessfully depends on teachers' teaching quality which is guaranteed byteachers' professional development. All these facts indicate that teachers'professional development is the best way to improve teachers' teachingquality and to realize curriculum reform.
In addition, as an international language, English is playing asignificant role in international affairs, such as political communications,business trades, and cultural contacts all over the world. Since Chinaentered WTO in 2001, English has become more and more important inour daily life and the number of English learners has been increasing yearby year. However, in China, it was not until the mid-1990s that Englishteacher education was much concerned. In 1999, in the article namedForeign Language Teaching Reform: Imperative under the Situation waspublished to discuss the reform of foreign language teaching. Somespecial commentators stated that there are two main problems in ourEnglish teaching. The first is that the learning cycle is too long but thelearning efficiency is too low. The second is that teacher quality does notfit for the social situation.
