摘要:The purpose of this study is to investigate the advantages and disadvantages ofTEFL postgraduate cultivation program and propose some possible solutions to optimizethis program. Students' opinions about curriculum design, teaching staff, teachingpractice and final assessment are to be identified, analyzed and classified.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background to the study
The twenty first century is a century marked by the talent competition and higher requirement of people's quality, and the cultivation of talents and the improvement ofpeople's quality to a great extent depend on Education. Teachers play a key role in this process and contribute greatly to improvements in the quality of education, especially EFL teachers who have to meet the needs and standards of English as an international language. As the leading member of education force, normal universities which are responsible for pre-service teachers' education on both undergraduate and postgraduate levels have cultivated millions of teachers each year and contributed to the education career of our country immensely. There have been a lot of diverse reforms and initiatives to change education and teacher education in different parts of the world since themid-1990s.

1.1研究背景
二十一世纪是人才的竞争,人的素质的更高要求,以及人才的培养和提高人的素质在很大程度上取决于教育标记。教师在这个过程中发挥了关键作用,并极大地有助于改善教育质量,尤其是必须满足的需求和标准的英语作为一种国际语言的英语教师。作为国内领先的教育力量的成员,这是负责职前教师教育本科和研究生水平的师范院校已经培养了数以百万计的教师,每年到我国巨大的教育事业做出了贡献。 20世纪90年代中期以来,已经有很多不同的改革和措施,以改变在世界各地不同的教育和教师教育。

 

Particularly at the beginning of the 21^^ century, how to optimize our efforts to enhance the aims, content, and practice of pre-service teacher education for teachers to develop and excel in such a rapidly changing local and global context is an urgentinter national concern in education reforms (Cheng 2001). Several educators (such as Larsen-Freeman, 2000; Nunan, 2003) have called for reforms and changes in EFL teacher education in order to raise the quality of teaching and learning.

特别是在进入21^世纪,如何优化我们的努力,加强职前教师教育的目标,内容和实践教师在这样一个快速变化的本地和全球范围内开发和迫切间全国关注教育改革(郑2001)。一些教育工作者(如拉森-弗里曼,2000;努南,2003年),被称为外语教师教育的改革和变化,以提高教学和学习的质量。


The purpose of professional development programs is quite essential in the reformsand changes of EFL teacher education. Most professional development programs share acommon purpose to alter the professional practices, beliefs, and understanding of schoolpersons toward an articulated end. (Griffin, 1983, p. 2) As a main approach to cultivatesuch talents, professional degree master programmes play an important role in teachereducation and develop very fast in many fields. In 2009, TEFL (full-time teachers ofEnglish as a foreign language) postgraduate education programme is put forward.Compared with the four-year Normal students education programme, this program aimsto train advanced specialists in English teaching and research as well as their academicabilities in linguistics, translation, etc. The syllabus issued by the Ministry of Educationstates about the cultivation objectives of the graduates "to cultivate advanced English teachers with solid English language foundation and comprehensive academiccompetence" and will make great efforts to foster the transfer from academic-centeredtalents cultivation programme to practical-centered talents programme (Ministry ofeducation, 2009). Thus, professional graduate programme ushers into a new era ofdevelopment with enlarged enrolment and more professional fields, which cultivate abatch of talents with practical ability for middle school and high school.Despite of its development, there exist some problems in the programme.
