摘要:This Study is set to reveal how argumentative texts was organized under theframework of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) primarily proposed by Mann &Thompson (1987) and developed by Mann, Matthiessen and Thompson (1992).

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Background
Based on subjective evaluation of a problem, argumentative text is one of the texttypes that is intended to persuade and convince the reader to believe in, accept,or atleast to entertain a particular opinion,standpoint or proposition. The function of anargumentative text is to show that your assertion (opinion, theory, hypothesis) aboutsome phenomenon or phenomena is correct or more truthful than others. Due to thisfunction, argumentative text has relatively steady structure and format.Both the reading and writing of argumentative essays are frequently encounteredby English language learners. However, many of them cannot get the main idea andpurpose of the whole text due to poor mastering of the over-all structure when readingan argumentative text. Correspondingly, many students may meet with the problemsthat the main idea is ambiguous, the sentences are illogic and the paragraphs are poorlyorganized during the argumentative writing. Specifically, their problems in writing existin several aspects. Chinese English learners tend to lack in text consciousness,which isreflected by irrelevance in inter-sentence relationship. They may definitely be able towrite grammatically correct sentences, but they cannot write sentences with logicalinter-sentence relationships by employing cohesive devices and semantic coherence.Thus, studying on argumentative text structure, which displays the cohesion andcoherence of the text, is of great importance in improving students' ability in bothreading and writing the argumentative text.

1.2 Purpose and Significance
This Study is set to reveal how argumentative texts was organized under theframework of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) primarily proposed by Mann &Thompson (1987) and developed by Mann, Matthiessen and Thompson (1992). To thisend, this dissertation presents an analysis of the RST structure of five argumentativetexts selected from the textbooks of New Horizon College English (Reading andWriting series) based on certain criteria. The study investigates the global RST structureof the argumentative texts as well as their micro structure and aims to arrive at structuralgeneralizations.By employing 32 RST relations introduced by Mann and Thompson (1987) andMann et al. (1992),this study opted to investigate the rhetorical structures (RSs) of theselected 5 essays. It searches primarily to determine which rhetorical relations enjoy thehighest frequency of occurrence in argumentative texts and further to explain how therelationship between these rhetorical relations and the content they express isestablished. Moreover, through a careful analysis of the obtained RSs, this investigationmanifests the global Rhetorical Structure pattern(s) of argumentative texts.To be precise, this thesis aims to explore how the argumentative text is organizedand how to organize such a text through the structural analysis based on the frameworkof Rhetorical Structure Theory. Such analysis can enhance the learner's sense of unity,connectedness and coherence of the texts. Therefore, to study typical Englishargumentative texts from textbooks widely used and reveal their deep structurecharacteristics are significant for English language learners to enhance their ability ofreading and writing of such texts.
