摘要:Although there are many studies on student’s learning motivation, and many studieson multimedia teaching, most of them are from the middle school or the undergraduatestudents. Few of them are done from a multimedia teaching perspective to thenon-English major postgraduates’ learning motivation.

Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Research background
English Teaching Syllabus for Non-English Major Postgraduates (on Trail)(1993),issued by the Ministry of Education states clearly the purpose of English teaching forNon-English Major Postgraduates: to enable students master English well, to continuetheir professional study and international communication, and serve China’s socialistconstruction. And the teachers are required to develop students’ ability to listen, speak,read, write and translate. The students are asked to use English as a tool for their futureprofessional learning and research. And some students who are majored in some specialfields are asked to have a better mastery of English. Therefore, the teachers should adoptproper methods in their teaching, while students should develop certain motivation tolearn English.Motivation is always considered as an important factor in foreign language learning.The problem of motivation in foreign language learning is a well-focused topic, andmany researches’ results show that motivation plays a key role for foreign languagelearning success. A strong motivation can make up for the language skills and learningconditions’ deficiency, while if a flair person for languages is lacking of motivation, hewill be hindered to achieve his long-term language learning goals (Dornyei,1998). Themotivation is a key point to language learning success, and it deserves the attention fromresearchers and teachers.

1.2 Significance of the study
As the CALL (Computer-assisted language learning) is the common representationfor multimedia teaching, to begin with, this thesis makes up the blank of CALL empiricalstudies on non-English major postgraduate’s English learning in the Northern of Shanxiprovince. In this thesis, the author uses some educational psychology, learning theoriesand English linguistics theories which can help to get an overall situation andcharacteristics about the non-English major postgraduates’ learning motivation. Thereby,it will enrich the current English teaching theories and have a certain guidance roleduring the students’English learning. Although there are considerable surveys and studies related to motivation in Englishlearning,almost no empirical researches on non-English major postgraduates’motivationin learning English have been done in the context of multimedia. To some extent, thestudy may enrich the empirical evidence in the area of motivation and be helpful toEnglish teaching for non-English major postgraduates and college English teaching and learning in Chinese context. The findings of the study will benefit English teachers,students, and researchers in their practice. For English teachers, they need to identifytheir students’ motivation and attempt to arouse students’ motivation in class, and toprovide affective measures to cultivate students’ motivation with the aim of improvingteaching efficiency. For learners, they should be aware of their motivation and developthe ability of being self-directed.
