Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Present Study
English writing is seen as one of the most difficult skills by the second language learners.For the graduate students, they have learned thousands of words and phrases, but their writingsdo not match to their English level, which may resulted by their using of avoidance strategiesconsciously or unconsciously. In order to finish the communication task or not to make mistakesand lose face, avoidance strategy is also used in the process of English learning.In the 1960s, several researchers in the field of second language acquisition had noticed thesystematic absence of some specific feature in the second language learners’ writings. Only in1974, the notion of avoidance phenomenon was first proposed by Schachter (1974) in An Errorin Error Analysis. Since then, the researches on avoidance phenomenon has been concerned bythe second language researchers, which were founded on the theories of second languageacquisition, error analysis and communication strategies.The theory of second language acquisition believes that The second language learners willemploy avoidance for two reasons. The first reason is the difference between the native languageand the target language. Through conscious learning, learners have noticed the correct forms ofthe target language, but have not acquired them yet. And they feel it is troublesome for consciousmonitoring. The second reason is that learners fail to acquire enough knowledge of the targetlanguage to correct the errors by themselves, even though they have already realized thedifference between the two languages. Since The second language learners are incapable ofcorrecting the errors, they prefer to avoid making errors in order to express accurately.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Present Study
Firstly, pervious studies abroad on avoidance mainly involved a specific language form, forexample, relative clauses, phrasal verbs, passive voice, etc. The studies on avoidance of somespecific language structure guide the pedagogy of each individual language items, but neglect theoverall structures of the second language learners’ English writings.Secondly, the participants involved in the pervious studies are students who lived or studiedin English speaking countries. Their language environment differs from that of the Englishlearners in China. And the empirical studies of avoidance in China mostly regard avoidance as akind of communication strategy. The empirical studies were generally conducted among thecollege students or middle school students, whose English proficiency level is different from thegraduate students.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 An Overview of Avoidance
Schachter (1974) pointed out the avoidance phenomenon firstly, who examined writingswritten by English learners from Persian, Arabic, China and Japan and found that Chinese andJapanese learners produced much fewer relative clauses. Then Schachter hypothesized thatChinese and Japanese learners tried to avoid using relative clauses, for the great differencebetween the right-branching language (English) and left-branching language (Chinese andJapanese).
