摘要:Although some scholars and researchers have made a lot of contribution incohesion or analysis, and we know some helpful information for reference in thisarea, it should be mentioned that their researches limited to identification anddescription of the errors.

Introduction


0.1 Research Backround
Vocational college English teaching has been implemented for several decadesin China. Recently, English teaching emphasis has changed from teaching languageitself to improving learners' language skills of listening, speaking, reading andwriting. However, it is found that the writing is the poorest one among the four skillsowing to some factors, since the written language is required to be more appropriateand more effective than the spoken text.To some degree, most vocational college students in China have mastered thefimdameatal English writing skills. The English learners in Chinese colleges face alot of problems in English writing. At the very beginning of learning English, thelearners just master the isolated words and sentence, and then, they spend little timeand effort on English writing. Even at high school, the test-oriented educationalsystem makes them have less time to cultivate writing skills. In vocational college,the learners still put less emphasis on writing. It is a sad thing that some teachers onlypay attention to grammatical points in writing class. Thus, we find tiiere are manyerrors in their compositions. They are not able to express their ideas and outputgrammatically and meaningfully connected discourses which can be completelyunderstood by readers. Another point that needs noting is that when writing, they justtranslate their Chinese into English without paying attention to the fact that Englishand Chinese belong to different language systems. So it is common that they wouldproduce many Chinglish phrases and sentence even paragraph. In addition, they oftenneglect the grammatical and lexical ties. And they always just list some simplesentences together without caring whether they ate coherent or not. It is found thatamong all the common errors that they commit the most serious error is theinadequate use of cohesive devices. It is a difficult task to produce a grammaticallyand meaningfully connected composition.

0.2 Research Purpose
It is a headache for teachers and learners to produce natural and coherentsentences in students' writings. It is fortunate that the errors analysis can offer the teachers with a technique for analyzing errors in writing. Halliday and Hasan thinkthat the "cohesion is the foundation of coherence that is the most importantprerequisite for the text."(Halliday & Hasan, 2001:13) Therefore, it may be helpful toinvestigate the cohesive devices used and the cohesion errors committed by thelearners.Although some scholars and researchers have made a lot of contribution incohesion ?ror analysis, and we know some helpful information for Reference in thisarea, it should be mentioned that their researches limited to identification anddescription of the errors. They did not further analyze the causes of the errors. Theimpetus of ttie present study aims to discuss the use of cohesive items in the Englishwritings by 40 first-year non-English majors in Florida International College ofZhengzhou University, based on the Cohesion Theory and Halliday and Hasan'staxonomy of cohesive devices, trying to identify and quantify the cohesive errors intheir writings.
