摘要:A number of studies have shown that, with the significant role in contributing to cohesionand coherence of a text,the use of adverbial connectors is problematic for language learners,particularly for foreign language learners .

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION


1.1 Research Background
Nowadays, English ability of Chinese non-English major college students,,especiallylistening and speaking ability is becoming stronger. Their writing level, however, hasn't beeneffectively improved. The C 'o/Icge English Cun'iciUidm Requiremen(s requires the collegestudents to be able to complete the general writing task,describe the personal experiences,impressions and happenings etc.. write practical writing, write down the 120 words of shortessay and the content is basically completed, the words is properly used and is semanticallycoherent. And the most serious problem in writing is semantic coherence. The fact is thatmany Chinese students do not know how to make the sentence in their writings to be jointedcoherently.

1.2 The Significance of Adverbial Connectors in Written English
Vande Kopple (1985) believes that adverbial connectors can help readers organize,interpret, evaluate, and react to the information given. According to Biber et al. (2000a),adverbial connectors can explicitly signal the connections between passages of text, which arevery important devices for creating textual cohesion, alongside coordinators andsubordinators. They serve what Hailiday (1973) calls the textual and interpersonal functionsof language,as opposed to the ideational function of language. According to Hailiday (1973),the textual function enables the speaker to organize what he is saying in such a way that itmakes sense in the context and fulfills its function as a message. While the interpersonalaspect of language allows writers to make their own presence explicit in a text; it also permitsthem to express their comments、attitudes, and evaluations of propositions and to express therelationship between writers and readers.Thus, in English written discourse, adverbial connectors can not only help readers withtext comprehension, but also enable readers to interact with writers and to encounter as littledifficulty as possible in capturing writers' intention while reading. Many researches haveshown that, if used appropriately, adverbial connectors can contribute greatly to the clarityand comprehensibility of discourse (e.g. Mauranen 1 993; Tyler 1 994; Flowerdew & Tauroza1995).

CHAPTER TWO LITERATURE REVIEW


2.1 Adverbial Connectors
For the sake of consistency, they are all referred as'connectors' in this part. Connectors are one of the three rhetorical resources to produce acoherent written text (Byrne 1982). According to Byrne, connectors are “words or phraseswhich indicate meaning relationship between or within sentences”(p. 18). If connectors areused appropriately, they will function as text-organizers which allow sentence sequences to beunderstood as connected discourse rather than as autonomous sentences. As Halliday & Hasannoted, “With conjunction, we move into...a specification of the way in which what is to followis systematically connected to what has gone before"(I 976:227).Connectors, however, do not create relationships. They only express the cohesiverelationships that already exist in the writer's thinking. They are indicators or visible signalsof the relationships.
