摘要:To remedy the limitations of previous studies in the advanced multimodallearner’s dictionary, this research will center on the three mainstream advanced ELDs.First, it will explore the existing word classes that can be illustrated in the presentadvanced ELDs.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Rationale of the Study
According to Hartmann and James (2000), learner’s dictionary, also calledpedagogical dictionary, is a Reference work compiled to satisfy “the didactic needs ofteachers and learners of a language, aiming primarily at non-native learners of alanguage”. Linguist David Crook once said that foreign language learning is forexchanging ideas and communicating (Hu Yining, 2009, pp. 7-8). Therefore, thefamous English educator G. h. Palmer points out that English learning has fourpurposes: taking English learning as a science, or a history course to master; as apleasure to enjoy and as a tool to use (ibid.p.15). Since the purpose of acquiring alanguage is to communicate, the vocabulary of the language, which forms thefoundation part of the language system, appears to be particularly significant.However, the separate treatment of grammar and vocabulary of language intraditional structuralism results in the “detailed grammar rules” and the simpleunitary patterns of vocabulary structure in language teaching and learning (Sinclair,2004).Wilkins (1972, p. 111) comments that “without grammar, we can communicate;without vocabulary, we can hardly speak.” The mastery of a proper amount ofvocabulary is necessary and crucial in acquiring a foreign language. Dictionary is “alist of vocabulary”. Its unique function of having “great potential in learner’svocabulary development” (Leaney, 2009, p. 27) cannot be ignored. As lexicographerHurbert (1968) says that there is no reference work used as widely as a dictionary,which is also true to learner’s dictionary.

1.2 Objectives of the Study
With the closed corpora, i.e. the total entries with pictorial illustrations inOALD8, LDOCE4, and CIDE, this thesis will discuss the types of lemma withpictorial illustrations, the relations between different kinds of pictorial illustrationsand different types of lemma, and the relations between image definition and wordsdefinition from multimodal discourse analysis; then, based on the previous data anddiscussion, the goal of the study is to present the image-word definition modes inmultimodal learner’s dictionary with the intention to provide some guidance tomultimodal definition in printed English learner’s dictionary in the future, especiallythe English-Chinese learner’s dictionary compilation. This thesis is divided into six chapters. The structure of the paper is as follows.Chapter One is the introductory part. In this part, we present the rationale of thestudy, including the importance of learner’s dictionary for language learners, theimportance of definition in learner’s dictionary, the importance of pictorialillustration, the importance of multimodal learner’s dictionary for multimedialearning and multimodal definition study in learner’s dictionary. Then, the objectivesof the study and the layout of the thesis are also discussed in detail.

2.1 Previous Studies on Dictionary Definition
What does it mean to “define a word”? is an old question raised repeatedly byPlato, Aristotle, and many modern philosophers, especially logicians and philologists.Logic definition is different from lexical definition, but scholars do not alwaysseparate them or separate them correctly.
