摘要:Theoretically, to the author’s knowledge, few studies at home have investigated thedifferences between the reading effects of traditional printed text reading and hypertextreading, not to mention how hyperlinks in hypertext reading influence students’ readingeffects.

1. Introduction


1.1 Purpose of the Study
With the rapid development of network technology, our human society is experiencing anunprecedented information revolution. The coming of information era not only has made atremendous effect on people’s mode of production and ways of living, also has changed theway people think and learn. Meanwhile, the information technology based on computers hasbeen widely applied in Educational field. Computers in the field of education have developeda large amount of new knowledge and gradually accumulated, and then formed a new andcomprehensive research area: Computer-aided Instruction (CAI), which combines educationalknowledge with computer knowledge and technology.On the other hand, reading is an important way of obtaining knowledge and informationfor human beings. In the web-based environment, people’s reading models have changed a lot.From printed texts to hypertexts; from linear reading to non-linear reading; form traditionalprinted text reading to hypertext reading. For most of Chinese EFL (English as a ForeignLanguage) learners, English Reading in the web-based environment has become a more andmore common phenomenon. Students have more and more opportunities to read Englishmaterials on computer screens, such as, communicate with their teachers or hand in theirhomework by e-mail, use English learning software, use computers for online reading and soon. Hypertext reading, as a new model of reading has become an inevitable trend in such aweb-based learning environment. What’s more, in 2007 College English CurriculumRequirements announced by National Ministry of Education proposed that colleges anduniversities should largely apply advanced information technologies, promote web-basedcollege English teaching. That is to say, hypertextualization should be more and more appliedin college English teaching.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Theoretically, to the author’s knowledge, few studies at home have investigated thedifferences between the reading effects of traditional printed text reading and hypertextreading, not to mention how hyperlinks in hypertext reading influence students’ readingeffects. The main significance of this study is making a comparison between the readingeffects of traditional printed text reading and hypertext reading. Second, although there areseveral studies have proved the reading effects of hypertext, the number of academicresearches is still too small, much less the study of hypertext reading for Chinese Englishmajors. Therefore, this study attempts to discuss that in the web-based environment, ChineseEnglish majors’ reading effects of using hyperlinks in hypertext reading, and this study alsoinvestigates English majors’ attitudes towards hypertext reading and the difficulties in Englishmajors’ hypertext reading. They will theoretically contribute to the study of the reading effectof hypertext.

2. Literature Review


2.1 Hypertext
In the age of print, traditional reading means reading paper and books, which are allprinted texts.
