1.1 Studies on Narrative Theory
Narrative theory, or narratology, is the study of narrative or story, written or otherwise. Aristotle, whose study of plot in drama promote thestudy of narrative as an art form that is known as poetics, is considered asthe founder of narrative theory. However, narratology was established asan independent discipline until 1966. In 1969,the term "narratology" wasfirst applied by French critic Tzvetan Todorov in Grammaire duDecameron (Shen 2003: 60) and its development has experienced for 40years.Todorov defines "narratology" as: "Narratology is the theory aboutnarrative structure. It studies the narrative grammar and narrative form.Whatever narrative media narrative works adopt, the purpose of the research is to confirm their functions and interrelations so as to find outthe general structure of narrative works.,,(Xiao 2005; 4)Prince defines "narratology" as: "Narratology is the research on theform and function of narrative.”(1982: 4)Mieke Bal defines "narratology" as; "Narratelogy is the theory ofcultural product about narrative, narrative text, image, event and narratingstory. ”(Bal 1997: 1)The rise of narratology is closely related to the structuralism whosefounder is the famous linguist --- Saussure. After Saussure, Chomskyfounded the famous discipline which mainly studies the generation of asentence not the application of a language --- that is TransformationalGenerative Grammar. In his theory, a sentence can be divided into deepstructure and surface structure. Deep structure is about the abstractstructure of a sentence and determines the sentence meaning. Surfacestructure refers to the practical expression of the phonetic form. The basicpart of a sentence produces the deep structure which is generated into thesurface structure through transformation.
