摘要:This study mainly presents the cognitive framework, the qualitative researchmethod is used to refine the study accomplishments in voice study and to shapereflections on the topic, with the combination of diachronic and synchronic analysis.
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Purpose of the Study
English voice constructions have long been hot topics among various grammars. Therefore, they are highly discussed both in research and English language teaching. Intraditional English teaching process, although people have realized the active-passiveasymmetry constructions, it is still a dilemma in transforming one voice to the otherbecause some transitive verbs cannot be used in both active and passive voices. Thedivision and the degree of transitivity in English voice have aroused grammarians ofdifferent schools to conduct research in certain perspectives, but there is no easy way tofind a unified standard to put the axe in the helve, especially in second languageteaching. The aim of this thesis is to seek a reasonable and comprehensive approach tothe transitivity in English voice within cognitive theoretical frames. We hold that thedegree of verbal transitivity is the key element in determining the choice of voiceconstruction. Transitivity is expressed in a scalar according to the voice forms, therefore, there is a transitivity continuum within the voice category.

1.2 Methodology and Procedures
This study mainly presents the cognitive framework, the qualitative researchmethod is used to refine the study accomplishments in voice study and to shapereflections on the topic, with the combination of diachronic and synchronic analysis. Wepay attention to the integration effect of the whole and the part, which guides theapproach to English voice category. This paper studies from the angle of transitivity theory combined with theprototype theory analysis, and analyzes the active, middle, and passive voicescomprehensively from the prominence view. It aims to make clear the division of voicecategories, their correlations and their application on semantics and syntax. Moreover, itpresents the influence that degrees of transitivity have on the choice of voices, and givesmore reasonable explanation on the so-called “special structure” in traditional teaching. The introduction of prototype theory into grammar research has broad applicationprospects and theoretical advantages. This is also in line with the basic principles ofcognitive linguistics: language is an organic whole that is composed of semantics, structure and function. The application of prototype theory could explain the middlevoice fully. Cognitive linguistics holds transitivity behavior is passed from oneparticipant to another participant. Transitivity consists of many elements and forms acontinuum from transitive to intransitive, which shows prototypical characteristics. Theprominent degree of transitivity could determine the structure of a clause, i.e., thechoice of the subject or the voice of the predicate. In terms of the theoreticalbackground, English voice has three sub-areas: the active voice, the middle voice andthe passive voice.

Chapter 2 Literature Review: Studies of English Voicefrom Different Schools of Grammar.
2.1 Previous Studies Abroad
For the traditional grammarians, the term VOICE is used to explain the relationshipbetween an active verb phrase and a passive one in terms of structure and meaning, suchas Jespersen (1933), Hill (1963), Palmer(1965), and Quirk et al (1985).In the traditional gra本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
