Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Research
With the more interaction among nations, English has become an important tool for globalcommunication, which has been recognized by more and more people. As for the four main skillsin English, that is, listening, speaking, reading and writing, Wen Qiufang contends that one of themost important criteria to judge whether he is a talented person or not is to see his Englishwriting ability. Writing plays a key part in second language acquisition (SLA) because itrepresents one’s whole mastery of the English language. With the rapid development of secondlanguage acquisition, many researchers are more concerned about English writing in languageteaching and learning. However, although the importance of writing can not be overlooked,writing which is not an easy work has been a big headache interfering both teachers and learnersfor a long time.In spite of the fact that writing has been given enough attention in the teaching program, asfor everyday learning and teaching of the English language, both the students and the teachers donot pay enough attention to it. Many students are likely to have a wrong assumption that writingis just to interpret the given information in a writing task or simply to translate their thoughtsabout the topic, to some extent, which hinders the improvement of their writing ability. Andmany students think it embarrassing to show their disadvantages to others. As a result, whenfacing some difficulties in writing, they usually don’t ask others for help. When facingunsuccessful experience in writing, they would lose heart even if they might have made greatefforts which they don’t notice. With regard to teachers, on the one hand, they always take it forgranted that writing is a simple task and ignore the necessity of systematic EFL (English as aForeign Language) writing teaching. On the other hand, they do not have enough time in class toteach the students the ways to write, for they have to complete the task of reading teaching. Eventhough teachers do teach writing in class, they probably just list out many so-called writingsamples, or simply evaluate the students’ writings briefly, without systematically illustrating howthe students should write well.

1.2 Objective and Significance of the Research
As we all know, it’s been a long time since we studied SLA and there are a large number ofresearchers carrying out researches in English writing. Most of them are at the surface levelsuch as how to make an introduction of an article, how to come to a conclusion, how to expressone’s opinions, how to illustrate arguments to support one’s ideas. Compared with listening andreading, writing is a completely productive process. Therefore, it is of great importance for thelearners to study many strategies to make their writing cognition better. To put it simply,metacognition is “cognition of cognition”. So it will be of great use to improve students’metacognition in writing.As we have mentioned above, metacognition has played an important role in the languagelearning since it was put forward by Flavell in 1976. But most researchers abroad focus onmetacognitive strategies, the classification and characteristics of the metacognition, and mostresearches are implemented on the babies and pre-school students.
