As Danesi’s points (1994), althoughthey did well in the verbal fluency, they lacked the conceptual appropriateness whichcharacterized the corresponding discourses of the native speaker.

Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the Present Study
Over 2000 years ago, from Aristotle’s perspective (1958:22), the greatest thingwas to be a master of metaphor. And he thought that metaphor was a word replacedwith the name of another a word. From then on, many scholars researched it fromdifferent perspectives. From the book Metaphors We Live by written by Lakoff andJohnson in 1980 beginning, the study of metaphor transferred rhetoric to cognition.Richards (1936) believed that metaphor could no longer be regarded as alinguistic rhetoric, but as a process of thinking. Thus, metaphor is out of the ideas ofrhetoric and meets its cognitive turning. Following, some researchers started to studymetaphor from its nature. In the 1970s and 1980s, study on metaphor was carried outin a large scale from a new perspective of cognitive linguistics which regardedlanguage as a part of cognition. Meanwhile, cognitive linguists stated that it wasessential to research the cognitive rules under the language phenomena. According tothese, it is reflected that the ability of acquiring, producing, and interpretingmetaphors in the target language is important to language learning in cognitive theory.In 1987, Gardner and Winner named the ability metaphoric competence (MC), takingthe same place with Chomsky’s linguistic competence and Hymes’ communicative competence.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Present Study
Writing takes up an important role in learning English, but it always is a bigheadache for both English teachers and learners. As Danesi’s points (1994), althoughthey did well in the verbal fluency, they lacked the conceptual appropriateness whichcharacterized the corresponding discourses of the native speaker. Based on Lakoff andJohnson’s views (1980), of English expressions, 70% are produced from themetaphorical concept. Thus, metaphor plays an important role in writing and themetaphorical ability is vital to language learning.Through collecting and investigation, many studies are about the correlationbetween metaphor competence and English proficiency, reading, or vocabularies. Fewempirical investigations are on the correlation between MC and Writing Ability ofEnglish Majors. Well, a study on the correlation between writing and metaphoricalcompetence needs to be researched. This thesis will be studied from three aspects.Firstly, whether there is correlation between writing level and metaphorical competence. Secondly, based on Azuma’s (2005) opinion, metaphoric competenceconsists of receptive MC (understanding) and productive MC (expression). Thus, ifthe relationship exists, the author will further go on the study from two detail aspects,which are how the correlation between receptive competence and writing ability isand how the correlation between productive competence and writing ability is. Finally,in order to learn whether the students who have high metaphorical competence dowell in their writing, the author will divide the students into three groups-high, middleand low according to their metaphorical competence. Thereby the results will givemuch help and direction to foreign language teaching and learning.
