1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
Writing, as one of the four basic skills in English learning, was not only regarded as thedifficult point for masses of students, but also the focal teaching point for teachers. Themutual problem of the students and teachers is how to improve the English writing abilityeffectively. There are differences as well as similarities between our mother tongue and thesecond language. In English writing, students always resort to their mother tongue, especiallyin organizing the text and expressing ideas, which is the positive transfer of the mother tongue,while the difference between the two languages will make students feel puzzled and makeerrors which is called the negative transfer.The influence of the native language on the second language writing has always beencontroversial in the field of second language acquisition. There are a large mount of differentviews of transfer between Ll and L2.To discover the role of L1 transfer in L2 acquisition, lots of theories have been are putforward by the scholars, which can mainly be divided into 3 categories. The firstrepresentative theory is Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis, based on the behaviorist view. Theybelieved that difference exit between mother tongue and the second language. The difficultyin acquiring the second language is attributed to the difference between these two kinds oflanguages. They stressed the negative transfer of the native language in L2 acquisition. Thesecond category of theory is Creative Construction, which is on the basis of Chomsky ’suniversal grammar. They stressed the opinions that people are born with innate mentallearning mechanism that facilitate the L2 acquisition and believed that the second languagelearning is unaffected by the first language transfer. They claimed that the acquisition of thesecond language was the reformation of the universal grammar.

1.2 Purpose and significance of the study
The present study aims at investigating the correlation between Chinese writing abilityand English writing ability. The ultimate purpose of this study is to emphasize the beneficialrole of Chinese in English writing, and the improvement of the ability of Chinese writingshould be an acid to improve English writing ability rather than an obstacle.In terms of the significance of this study, the final findings of this research will providetheoretical and pedagogical support to the study of writing in the second language.From a theoretical perspective, due to the influence of Contrastive Analysis Hypothesistheory, majority of the researchers, at home or abroad concentrate on the negative transfer ofthe native language in L2 writing, while the researches about positive transfer of L1 in L2writing are very limited. This study attempts to investigate the correlation between Chinesewriting ability and English writing ability, which can make supplement to the previousfindings about positive transfer of Chinese in English writing. It can also provide theoreticalsupport for future study. In addition, the theory of Underlying Common Proficiency has beencomplemented and developed.
