Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the research
Listening is one of the four basic skills, it should be mastered in the course of learningany language. With the rapid development of economic globalization, every country has toestablish communications with other countries, and international communication hasbecome a commonplace. English, the most widely used international working language, is abridge for people to understand each other. Furthermore, English listening has been one ofthe most important communicative ways in which people express and exchange theirthoughts. With the number of international communications largely increasing in China,the vocational school graduates with high proficiency of foreign language ability,especially ones with high proficiency of listening abilities are badly needed in the nation aswell as the society.Vocational school in China has become one part of the whole educational system, andplays an essential function in the promotion of the social and economic development. Alarge number of applied special talents with higher techniques are output here. Englishteaching and learning in vocational school must keep pace with this trend so as to meet thedemands of the society. The basic task of vocational school is training the students tobecome the special talents with higher techniques. Therefore, English teaching andlearning in vocational school should concentrate on fostering students’ English listeningability.In English teaching and learning, listening plays an important role. It is an importantapproach for students to develop language communicative competence and improve theirability of using English in practice. It is stipulated in the newly revised Vocational SchoolEnglish Curriculum Requirements that English teachers should lay emphasis on thedevelopment of students’ listening ability. According to the Requirements, listening hasachieved the leading position in the whole system of language education and thedevelopment of English listening ability is the foundation of other kinds of languagecompetence. So it is necessary for students to improve their listening competence.

1.2 Significance of the research
Cooperative learning (CL) in education originates in America and become awidespread topic later in other European countries. In recent years, it has been regarded asan effective way for teaching and learning foreign language. CL can help students to solvethe practical problems and develop their learning proficiency. CL has experienced a quickdevelopment. And many researchers make a lot of substantial researches have beenconducted abroad. However, CL is still a new born thing in China. The studies on CL inChina only mainly focus on theory not the practical advantages and significance. So, it is necessary for teachers to carry out CL in classroom to testify its effectiveness.Everyone knows listening is very important for us to communicate with others in thedaily life. You understand what’s meaning of others by listening. So the students shouldmaster the skills of the listening. They will gain more, if they apply CL into their listening.Because of this, more and more English teachers in vocational school begin to choose CLapproach to teach listening and pay more attention to CL. By interacting with peers, it ishoped that students will increase their listening proficiency, arouse their interest andpromote their achievements.
