1. Introduction to News Leads
Although it is impossible to find a universal way to define news, all the definitionsstated above display the united notion of news that a news report belongs to a kind ofdiscourse wherever it appears. And it is generally recognized that the news includes threeparts: headline, lead, body. And in the text or discourse, new information about the latestevents is provided (Van Dijk, 1988: 3-4). It is only because of the news being viewed asa text or discourse that news reports have become the dominated materials for the studyof linguistics, semiotics, discourse analysis, communication, socio-psychology andsociolinguistics (Bell, 1991: 5). Also for this reason, as a key part of news, leads thusenjoy its reasonable recognition to be studied in this thesis. In the next part, the definitionof news leads will be demonstrated first followed by its features and classifications.When it comes to news leads, there are also varied definitions according to differentstandards. The first paragraph or the first two of a news report is generally called the leadas for its forms. For its content, news leads contain something the freshest and the mostimportant by simple and vivid words to summarize the whole report. Also the news leadis the most important part in charge of drawing the reader’s attention to continue theirreading. In other words, what to read depends on the headline of a news report, butwhether a reader is willing to read through a news report mainly rests on the news leads.

2. Introduction to Adaptation Theory
According to what Verschueren has stated, the usage of language is a social action,so pragmatics could be summarized as a general cognitive, social, and cultural view onlinguistic phenomena related to the way how they are performed as a kind of behavior(Verschueren, 2000: 7). Therefore, the proposal of the theory of adaptation renderspragmatics from this new view of the relationship between human and language, cultureand society. Since the foundation of such theory, international views of pragmatics havechanged a lot. Next the basic ideas and framework of Adaptation Theory will beintroduced.The Theory of Adaptation believes that the employment of language is a continuousprocess of linguistic choices-making, consciously or unconsciously, with internal-linguistic or external-linguistic reasons (Verschueren, 2000: 55). And the choices aremade based on following properties of language: variability, adaptability andnegotiability.
