Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Objectives of the Research
This thesis focuses on the application of Figure-Ground theory in concrete films to  study  their  linguistic  features  and  aesthetic  value.  This  paper  tries  to  examine whether  there  is  any  common  ground  of  language  application  in  the  first-person narrative voice, or voice-over in English movies.

1.2 Rationale of the Research
This paper mainly adopts Figure-Ground theory to study the thesis issue, but at the same time, literature theories and narrative theories (Abbott, 2002; W. Martin, 2006)  will  be  employed  to  define  the  concepts  and  the  point  of  view  which  are generally employed in the narration of films.  Filmic narrative theories are used to explain certain necessary technical terms. In other  words,  literature  theories  are  used  to  prescribe  the  data  collection,  while narrative theories are used to support the linguistic analysis to the source data. To achieve  this  goal,  linguistic  features  of  the  first-person  narrative  voice  shall  be segmented step by step. The voice-over in movies has been analyzed frequently from both literature and cinematographic perspectives (Chatman, 1978; Bordwell, 1985), but it is relatively new to scrutinize this field by using a linguistic approach. The author hopes to find whether certain linguistic principles are leading the creation of the first-person narrative voice, or voice-over in English movies. There are three questions need solving in this paper to elucidate how language functions are performed through and influencing the first-person narrative voice—voice-over narration in films:How  does  voice-over  differentiate  from  other  kinds  of  film  monologue  or dialogue?  What are the linguistic features of the voice-over?  What aesthetic value can it bring to new research? Or what circumstances can such narrative voice create?

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 A Brief Introduction of Film Sound

It is a great revolution when sound walked into the movie; its significance lies in it greatly changed the nature of film, and opened up a brand-new domain. The filmic sound makes the movie change from a pure visual art into an audio-visual art. So how did the movie transit from the silent era to a world of sounds? It took not very long time owing to the fast development of economy, science and technology. In the late 1880s, film came to this world, up to the late 1920s, film suffered from silent or deaf years. With the development of the sound research, people tried to bring sound into movies with all kinds of ways all over the world, and Warner Bros Pictures was a winner. During the year 1926 and 1927, Warner Bros Pictures successfully published some films with sounds and music, which stood for the coming of the sound era of film.
