Introduction
This chapter offers a general introduction to “Chinese dream” and “Made-in-China”. It consists of the following four parts, namely research background, research significance, research questions and the organization of the
thesis.
1. Research Background
“Chinese dream”(中国梦)1 was first put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping when he visited the Exhibition “Road toward Rejuvenation” on November 29, 2012. Later on March 17, 2013, Xi made a speech on “Chinese dream” at the closing ceremony of the first session of the 12th National People’s Congress. In the speech, “Chinese dream” is defined as “the final realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” and “the commitment to the international responsibilities and obligations” (Xi, 2013:4). In the same year, “Chinese dream” was selected as “Word of the Year” in China and it has become a worldwide topic during the past three years. “Made-in-China”(中国制造)2 is one of the most recognizable labels affixed to products manufactured in China and it is said that “people eat up everything China makes” (Bongiorni, 2008:18 ). However, “Made-in-China” is challenged by the western media campaigns which usually report negatively on its safety problem. As Wang&Han (2010:53) notice, the deterioration of images of “Made-in-China” is closely connected with Sino-US trade relations and media publicity. To enhance images of “Made-in-China”, Chinese government has taken effective measures to improve its quality and raised the slogans of “Created-in-China” and “Owned-by-China”. Just as Du et al. (2014: 11) recommend, only continuous technological innovation can enhance the competitiveness of “Made-in-China”.

2. Research Significance
News discourses have a great impact on controlling mind and ideology. Analyzing how western news media construct “Chinese dream” and “Made-in-China” is of great importance because the media influence western people’s attitudes toward China. Despite its importance, little academic research has been conducted on the studies of the news discourse about China in the West. The significance of the research lies in the following two aspects. First and foremost, the applicability of exploring news discourses integrating DHA and corpus linguistics is verified. The scope of DHA is not confined to interpretations of the West but also extended to the analysis of news discourse about China. Secondly, people can have a clear idea of what images of China are discursively constructed in the western media through studies
