1   Introduction 

In this chapter, brief information about Lawrence will be introduced. It covers the social background  of  Lawrence’s  living  and  writing  lives;  his  personal  information,  writing  style and more importantly, his creative philosophy on literature. Also, some of his most important works will be briefly discussed in this part, from which readers may get a general outline of his writing and thoughts.  

1.1   Social Background   
During  the  late  period  of  the  nineteenth  century  and  the  first  decades  of  the  twentieth century,  the  western  world  was  experiencing  a  great  change.  With  the  pace  of  the  second industrial revolution, both social and natural sciences have made significant developments in their  respective  fields.  The  rapid  development  of  science  and  technology,  fast  emerging technologies and inventions were quickly applied to industrial production, which contributed greatly  to  the  economic  development.  Monopoly  doctrine  was  formally  established.  People developed stronger sense of competition and participation which had changed their way of life. What came right after that was the greatly enriched material wealth. Some people thought this may drive away all the possibilities of frustrations. While, when they were enjoying the new world, others were suffering from even bitterer lives.  The  widening  wealth  gap  and  the  rapid  differentiating  social  classes  were  significantly changing people's mental state. Due to the imbalance of material world and spiritual world, coupled with the rise of feminist movement, male dominance as the rulers was weakened and even marginalized.  World War I which lasted for more than four years broke all the sweet dreams, brought unprecedented  disaster  to  people  in  the  whole  world;  and  severely  weakened  the  British Empire,  which  was  undergoing  a  serious  crisis,  socially  and  spiritually.  Postwar  economic chaos and spiritual disillusionment had caused enormous impact on British people and their thoughts. These impacts also reflected in the fields of art and literature.  The first a few decades of the twentieth century was a golden period for novel writing. Sensitive pioneers began to show their interest, tastes and values in the relationship between man and man, man and nature, and man and themselves which have climbed out of the chaos crying for serious attention. When exploring these, writers retained the old literary traditions, and also adopted a series of new writing techniques. Writer like D. H. Lawrence was regarded as the very artist who brought a revolution to British literature.
