Chapter One Introduction  

1.1 Research Background 
Conflict  and  talk  are  two  characteristics  of  human  social  life,  which  pervasively exist and are intellectually fascinating (Grimshaw, 1990). Conflict, according to Malloy &  McMurray  (1996:  185),  can  be  regarded  as  “a  relationship  when  two  people  have incompatible goals and use a variety of prosocial and antisocial strategies to influence each other”, which may exist in every place at any time among different people due to various  reasons.  According  to  Zhao  (2004)’s  study,  conflict  talk  occurs  when  one speaker  opposes  the  other  one’s  word,  deeds,  or  manners,  or  when  two  speakers hold different standpoints about the same people or same thing. Therefore, conflict talk is a commonly  occurred  phenomenon  in  people’s  communication  since  people  have different personal world views, values, and attitude toward the same thing, or they are intentionally uncooperative during communication because of personal character, habits and other specific reasons.  Conflict  talk,  as  a  kind  of  the  speech  acts,  is  defined  as  “the  open,  interactional dispute between two or more parties caused by a clash of goals that the parties perceive to be incompatible” in Encyclopedia of Language & Linguistics (Second Edition, 2005: 401).  By  deploying  verbal  or  non-verbal  skills,  the  opposing  parties  seek  to  gain  a dominant  position  that  protects  or  increases  their  prestige  and  secures  control  over contested  resources.  As  Kuo  (1992:  4)  proposes,  “Conflict  talk  is  ubiquitous,  normal, and  integral  to  the  workings  of  every  society”.  When  working,  one  may  burst  into conflict  with  colleagues  and  higher-ups;  when  studying,  one  might  argue  with classmates and teachers; even in daily life, it is hard for people to avoid conflict with family members, friends and even strangers.

1.2 Objectives and Significance of Current Study 
Through  investigating  the  conflict  talks  between  couples  collected  from  six Chinese TV series, this thesis aims to explore and summarize the terminating strategies of marital conflict talk on the basis of terminating models proposed by Vuchinich (1990) and  Zhao  (2004;  2008),  and  manage  to  explain  underlying  reasons  for  their  different using frequencies and influencing factors for the discrepancy between husband and wife in strategy-choosing from the perspective of face theory.
