Chapter One Introduction 

1.1 Rationale of the Research 
Owing  to  the  limitation  of  the  traditional  definition  model  in  bilingual dictionaries,  this  thesis  attempts  to  build  a  better  definition  model  for  hand  verbs with  the  help  of  Multidimensional  Definition  Model,  which  is  also  the  theory rationale  of  the  study.  The  problem  in  the  definition  of  present  Chinese-English Dictionaries makes the practical rationale of the research.As  is  known  to  all,  the  quality  of  a  dictionary  depends  on  the  quality  of  its definition  for  entries.  Because  of  its  many  different  features  to  the  monolingual dictionaries,  the  definitions  in  bilingual  dictionaries  are  different  from  those  in monolingual  dictionaries.  Zgusta  says  that  the  fundamental  purpose  of  bilingual dictionaries is to find the equivalents between the source and target language (1983). Traditional  definition  theory  of  equivalence  is  the  product  of  structuralism  and  of great  significance  to  promote  and  improve  the  quality  of  bilingual  dictionary’s compilation. But with the rise of learners’ dictionary and the theory of cognition and language  acquisition  in  second  language  teaching,  the  traditional  definition  theory cannot  meet  the  needs  of  learners.  The  present  Chinese-English  Dictionaries generally  weaken  descriptions  of  forms  and  simplify  explanations;  pay  more attention  to  comprehensive  information  and  neglect  production;  pay  no  attention  to users’ needs; and they are more dependent on monolingual dictionaries (Hu Wenfei, 2010). Therefore, further studies of definition model in Chinese-English Dictionaries are needed.

1.2 Research Objective  
Generally  speaking,  the  main  objective  of  this  thesis  is  to  construct  a  new multidimensional  definition  model  for  hand  verbs  in  internal  oriented Chinese-English Learners’ Dictionaries.  (1)To  investigate  the  current  definition  system  of  hand  verbs  and  classify different problems about the definitions of hand verbs in the present internal oriented Chinese-English dictionaries.
