Chapter 1 Introduction  

Cognitive  poetics  is  regarded  as  a  combination  of  linguistics  and  literature,  which  can provide a new study angle for the appreciation of literary discourses. With its own newly-built theoretical system, cognitive poetics takes the literary reading as the main subject and can find new approaches in analyzing literary works, especially poems which contain large numbers of images. The poems of D. H. Lawrence are not hot points in literary studies and with the help of cognitive poetics, the poems can get analyzed from a new perspective. This chapter as the beginning part gives the research background as well as the research purpose and significance of this thesis, in which  a brief introduction to cognitive poetics, especially  the figure-ground theory adopted in this study, and the poems of D. H. Lawrence are provided.  

1.1 Research Background  
At  present, the modern visual images have become a focus attracting people’s attention with  the  development  of  multi-media  technology,  and  it is  widely  acknowledged  that  human beings are brought into a visual cultural era. Seen synchronically from the intersecting surface such  as  pictures,  movies  or  television  programs,  or  diachronically  from  the  developing approach  such  as  totems,  paintings  then  simulacra,  the  visual  images  are  holding  a  complex connection  with  human  beings  and  their  cultural  society.  Surely,  the  charms  of  images  can present inevitable influence on the literary creations. Literary works, which are grounded with languages,  received  challenges  and  impacts,  but  meanwhile,  they  can  get  combined  with visual images in certain aspects. Therefore, the studies of images can provide a new angle for the researches on literary texts which can also be explored in terms of the literary images, and this  can  be  supported  with  the  help  of  interpretations  on  figure-ground  changes  in  cognitive poetics.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance  
This thesis adopts the dynamic figure-ground theory and conducts a cognitive analysis of one of Lawrence’s poem collections. It is hoped to find out how the attractors with different features  in  the  sample  poems  affect  the  figure-ground  changes,  and  how  these  changes  then influence the reader’s reading resonance during their appreciation towards the poems. Besides, it  is  also  believed  that  this  kind  of  cognitive  exploration  can  reveal  the  thematic considerations of the readers to the sample poems.
