Chapter One Literature Review
1.1 Previous Studies on Metaphor
Western scholars began to study metaphor a long time ago. It can be traced back to the ancient Greek. “The word metaphor comes from the ancient Greek metaphora derived from meta meaning ‘over’ and pherein meaning ‘to carry’. It refers to a particular set of linguistic processes whereby aspects of one object are ‘carried over’ or transferred to another object, so that the second object is spoken of as it were the first” (Hawkes 15). In the past two thousand years, scholars of different schools did many researches on metaphor. There are five theories which have great influences on the study of metaphor. The first one is the Comparison Theory. It is put forward by Aristotle. Aristotle is the first scholar who probed into the properties and functions of metaphor. He treats metaphor as “fancy language” which is only used by poets. There are many aspects of metaphor in his Poetics and Rhetoric. In Poetics, he gives us a description “metaphor is the transference of a name from the object to which it has a natural application; this transference can take place from genus to species or species to genus or species to species or by analogy”(Golden 37). He regarded metaphor as a figure of speech. Metaphor is the ornamental device. He put forward the Comparison Theory which regards metaphors as implicit comparisons between metaphorical expressions and literal paraphrases based on analogies or similarities. This theory has been regarded as the standard approach to metaphor study for a long time. Aristotle’s comprehensive study on metaphor has given enlightenment to the successive scholars. His study of metaphor is confined to the lexical level instead of exploring the nature.

1.2 Previous Studies on Animal Metaphor
Animal metaphor is important in human’s life due to the close relationship between animals and human beings. The author will give a brief review of animal metaphor study in this section. The Western scholars play a leading role in the study of animal metaphor. Brinkmann (1878) studied domestic animal expressions in several languages, such as English, French, German and Spanish. Riegler (1907) studied the origins of wild animal names and most frequently-used animal-related proverbs.
