摘要:本文是英语毕业论文,本研究运用强制性提取任务及句子翻译测试,借助认知教学方式和传统的语法规则教学方式对苏州某大学两个平行班的 81 名非英语专业一年级学生进行了教学实验。
Chapter One INTRODUCTION
As a leading part of the whole
thesis, this chapter provides a crucial underpinning for the present study. Significance, purpose as well as structure of the thesis are provided in this chapter.
1.1 Significance and Purpose of the Study
As function words, English articles occur the most frequently with the use of ―a/n‖ and ―the‖, taking 8.5 percent in a whole discourse or context (Berry, 2000). In Sinclair‘s (1991) corpus study, the indefinite article ―a‖ is found to rank the fifth with a frequency of 10.5 percent. The most frequent word will probably be the indefinite article ―the‖, which accounts for seven percent of the running words (Nation, 2004). In China, ―the‖ ranks the first and ―a‖ takes the eighth place in the most frequent word list of Chinese Learners of English Corpus (Gui, 2003). Trivial as they are, English articles are the most difficult and complicated words in use. What‘s more, it is well known to all that English articles pose great challenges to L2 learners of English, even to the most advanced ones. Due to the high frequency of English articles and their complicated meaning-function mappings, there is a growing interest in the study of English articles in recent years. Thus enormous studies concerning English article system have been conducted from various points of view, aiming at exploring the possible laws and rules to facilitate learners‘ acquisition of articles. And as a result, a handful of hypotheses about their use have de veloped as well, for example, Missing Surface Inflection Hypothesis (Prevost & White, 2000), Huebners‘ (1983) Semantic Wheel Hypothesis, Biological Program Hypothesis (Bikerton, 1975) and Fluctuation Hypothesis (Ionin & Wexler, 2004), in which Huebner‘s introduction to the semantic types of nouns as well as its relationship with articles‘ use provides us a new perspective in English articles.
