Chapter One   Introduction 

1.1 Background
With  the  continuous  development  of  the  Internet,  rapid  emergence  of  such  various information transmission modes like Weibo, We-chat and expansion of the electronic life style such as network shopping, on-line payment, people's daily life has become more and more  dependent  on  the  Internet.  According  to  the  35th  China  Internet  Development Statistics  Report  made  by  China  Internet  Network  Information  Center  (CNNIC)  on February  3,  2015,  there  were  already  649  million  netizens  in  China  by  the  end  of December  2014,  including  557  million  mobile  users.  The  Internet  penetration  rate  has reached up to 47.9%. Undoubtedly, networking groups have become the largest subculture groups, and the number is growing rapidly every year. Given the magnitude of the Internet, it  is  necessary  to  do  some  researches  on  the  network  language.  So,  this  paper  selects network  language  as  the  research  object.  Different  scholars  hold  various  views  on definition  of  network  language.  Crystal  (2001)  first  quoted  the  word  “Netspeak”  to summarize  the  network  language  in  his  book  Language  and  Internet,  “Netspeak  is  an alternative  to  Netlish,  Weblish,  Internet  language,  Cyber  speak,  electronic  discourse, electronic  language,  interactive  written  language,  computer-mediated  communication (CMC), and more cumbersome locutions”. So his definition of network language is a type of  language  whose  displaying  features  are  unique  to  the  Internet  and  encounters  in  the above situation (namely, in emails, chatting groups, virtual worlds and World Wide Web). Chinese  scholar  Li  Weiran  (2004)  argued  that  the generalized  network  language  includes the  language  which  relates  to  electronic  technology  computer  programming  and  network professional  term,  and  also  includes  the  natural  language  for  people’s  communication  on the  Internet.  The  narrow  sense  of  network  language  refers  to  the  natural  language  for communication  on  the  Internet.  But,  in  the  present  paper,  the  author  centers  on  the network  language  which  is  used by  netizens  on  the  Internet  and  contains  all  kinds  of  the communicative language with the medium of network tools.
