Zadeh(1965) initially brings up the term “vagueness”. He publishes an article named “Fuzzy Sets” in the “Information and Control” and raises “Fuzzy Theory” and the “fuzzy set” to explain the meaning of fuzziness. With regard to the delimitation, there is little agreement on definition of vagueness among linguists and a considerable amount of literature lacks convincing and plausible certification. Therefore, different considerations are responsible for different delimitation of vagueness. American philosopher Charles Peirce (1902:748), who is viewed as the originator of language philosophy, semantically comes up with a definition of vagueness: “A proposition is vague where there are possible states of things concerning which it is intrinsically uncertain whether, had they been contemplated by the speaker, he would have regarded them as excluded or allowed by the proposition. M. Black (1937), an American philosopher, points out vagueness at the lexical level in his “Philosopher and
Science”. As for Williamson (1996), he comes out his book “Vagueness” and examines vagueness from cognitive perspective. Moreover, his findings and contributions enrich people’s cognition of vagueness. British linguist Joanna Channell (2000) introduces what vagueness is and sums up three important phenomena of vagueness, namely vague additives, vague words and fuzzy implication. Her book “Vague Language” is based on multitudinous examples, constructive results and finally gives out functions of pragmatic vagueness and suggests some recommendation of English teaching. She calls for interpretation and exploitation of vagueness because of its potentially practical and theoretical importance.

2.2 Relevant studies on pragmatic vagueness
In the prior sections, the author has exemplified various approaches and directions to the study of vagueness. Indeed, pragmatic vagueness is a useful tool that enables speakers to make the most of its advantages. The investigation of pragmatic vagueness dedicates to delimiting the meaning of pragmatic vagueness, i.e. the user’s intention and the situation in which it occurs. As for the definition of pragmatic vagueness, different scholars express diverse interpretations. The author will fully explain He Ziran and Kampson’s assertion hereinafter. According to J. Thomas (1995) and Yu Dong Ming (1997), pragmatic vagueness refers to a situation in which speakers use vague or indirect words to convey typical meanings within specific context. He Ziran (1999:184) argues, “Language is a cover term of the uncertain features of language”, and advocates the study of pragmatic vagueness. From his viewpoint, “pragmatic vagueness refers to the vague concepts that can be analyzed by two-value logic, including fuzziness, indeterminacy, ambiguity.” Professor He Ziran (1990), who studi
