Chapter 1 Introduction
Nowadays, pragmatic vagueness is a prevailing linguistic phenomenon and vastly utilized in different domains, but its research in reality shows is still in vacancy. Therefore, this
thesis will make full use of Verschueren's Adaptation Theory as the theoretical framework to study pragmatic vagueness in job program. This chapter will cover the research background, research purpose, research questions, the innovation and the layout of the thesis.
1.1 Research Background
With rapid development of the human society, the interpersonal communication is playing an important role in our daily life. It is well acknowledged that verbal communication should be articulate and accurate. However, vagueness still bountifully exists in people’s everyday life. Therefore, the study of pragmatic vagueness has attracted many scholar and linguists’ attention. It is not until the late 20th century that the study of pragmatic vagueness has been initially put forward. On the other hand, study on pragmatic vagueness in China starts from 1990s. When it comes to the pragmatic vagueness, different people hold various viewpoints and angles. However, study of pragmatic vagueness from Adaptation Theory in the reality show is still in its infancy. Therefore, it is essential for the author to conduct the study of pragmatic vagueness from the Adaptation Theory in “The Apprentice”. It is well known that employment has received widespread concern in the society. “The Apprentice”, which is different from the traditional talk show and TV program, devotes itself to fully displaying how the candidates accomplish required tasks with equality, responsibility and interactive way to channel spectators into their own occupation. Compared with various analogous shows, it is gaining sensational popularity within the network learning communities, accounting for its wide dissemination and transmission. “The Apprentice” appears in people's vision generates ultimate aim to provide people with an all-round job platform and strategies when hunting for a job. In the study, the author employs Adaptation Theory as the theoretical framework and the American version of recruiting show—“The Apprentice” as a study case. Data in “The Apprentice” demonstrating relationships between job seekers themselves, applicants and employers, sponsors and job applicants, and recruiters themselves in the program, and analyzes the typical examples of pragmatic vagueness revealed by the interlocutors and it
