Chapter One Introduction
In this chapter, the overview of the whole study is presented. First of all, theauthor presents the motivation of this study. Then the author introduces theobjectives of this study. In next step, the
methodology and the collection of data ofthis study is given. At the end of this part, the layout of this
thesis is sketched.
1.1 Motivation of the Study
To guarantee that the communication between ourselves and other people willbe successful, we have to conform to those pragmatic conventions, such as beingpolite, being cooperative and so on. Therefore, the linguistic phenomena ofpoliteness and impoliteness in interpersonal interaction have always been importantissues in pragmatic studies. There are so many studies on linguistic politeness and impoliteness conductedby scholars both abroad and at home. Lakoff (1973) points out that maxims inGrice’s Cooperative Principle (CP for short) are too generous as regards “relevance”and “amount of information”, so some more specific description should be added. She proposes two pragmatic rules: (1) be clear; (2) be polite. Besides, she also givesstrategies that correspond to the two rules. Leech (1983) proposes PolitenessPrinciples (PP for short) which is regarded as the development and improvement toCP. PP includes six maxims which are as follows: Tact maxim; Generosity maxim;Approbation maxim; Modesty maxim; Agreement maxim; Sympathy maxim (Leech,1983, p. 132). Brown and Levinson are another two important scholars who madegreat contribution to the study of politeness. Brown & Levinson (1987) come up withthe famous Face-saving Theory (FST). Under the guidance of FST, scholarsconcentrate on the discussion of how to avoid or reduce face-threatening acts.

1.2 Objectives of the Research
In speech acts of mock politeness, the speaker may employ some strategies inorder to achieve the purpose of attacking on face. Among present researches, mostresearchers focus on the discussion of strategies or pragmatic functions of mockpoliteness. There are little researches that explore the construal mechanism of mockpoliteness, and few researchers apply the framework of event cognition into the studyon (im)politeness. Based on previous studies on mock politeness, this paper tries toreveal the construal mechanism of mock politeness by adopting theory of eventcognition. This thesis is about to achieve the following objectives:(1) To find out how the reversal effect of mock politeness is realized fromrespect for recipient’s face to attack on recipient’s face.(2) To reveal what the role of event model is during recipient’s comprehensionof reversal of mock politeness.(3) To reveal how and when the segmentation happen during recipient’scomprehension of mock politeness.

Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Introduction
It is easy for us to recognize whether some utterances are polite or not. However, the recognition of mock politeness is a little complex because of its mixture ofpoliteness and impoliteness. Mock politeness is probably the most interesting ofvarious uses of negative politeness features investigated here because it involves anabsolute inversion of effect; far from functioning to mitigate the FTA, the politenessforms constitute the FTA (Bethan L. Davis, Michael Haugh & Andrew John Merrison,2011, p. 226). The politeness forms, in speech acts of mock politeness,
