In this section, the general patterns of the first formants (F1), the secondformants (F2), the vowel space and the vowel duration of Changchun EnglishLearners and the native speakers are presented and analyzed one by one.Table 5.1 presents the first formants and the second formants of the twelveEnglish vowels that were produced by the two groups. In this table, both the meanvalues and the standard deviations of the first formants and the second formants ofthe vowels are provided. Besides, the vowel acquisition quality can also be measuredby the difference between the first formant and the second formant frequencies, sothe value of F2 - F1 (F2 minus F1) are provided in this table.The first formants of the twelve vowels range from 308 Hz to 879 Hz, as can beseen in the above table. F1 values are usually inversely proportional to the height ofthe vowels. Although the first formants of the vowels produced by the two groupsvary, some similarities still exist. Specifically, /i: / is produced with the lowest firstformants by the two groups, which means the tongue is highest when they produce/i: /. While /α: / is produced with the highest first formants by Cc ELs, which meansthey produce /α: / with the lowest tongue position. But is produced with thehighest first formant by the ANSs, that is to say ANSs produce / with the lowesttongue position.
