Chapter Five Data Analysis

This chapter presents and analyzes the results concerning the research questionsof this thesis one by one. Firstly, the formant patterns of the vowels produced byChangchun English Learners and the native speakers are discussed. Then thedurational features of English vowels produced by the two groups are discussed.Finally, the dialectal influence on Changchun English Learners’ vowel productionare analyzed.

5.1 Formant Features of English Vowels Produced by Cc ELsand ANSs

In this section, the general patterns of the first formants (F1), the secondformants (F2), the vowel space and the vowel duration of Changchun EnglishLearners and the native speakers are presented and analyzed one by one.Table 5.1 presents the first formants and the second formants of the twelveEnglish vowels that were produced by the two groups. In this table, both the meanvalues and the standard deviations of the first formants and the second formants ofthe vowels are provided. Besides, the vowel acquisition quality can also be measuredby the difference between the first formant and the second formant frequencies, sothe value of F2 - F1 (F2 minus F1) are provided in this table.The first formants of the twelve vowels range from 308 Hz to 879 Hz, as can beseen in the above table. F1 values are usually inversely proportional to the height ofthe vowels. Although the first formants of the vowels produced by the two groupsvary, some similarities still exist. Specifically, /i: / is produced with the lowest firstformants by the two groups, which means the tongue is highest when they produce/i: /. While /α: / is produced with the highest first formants by Cc ELs, which meansthey produce /α: / with the lowest tongue position. But is produced with thehighest first formant by the ANSs, that is to say ANSs produce / with the lowesttongue position.

This section will introduce the limitations in the study and provide somesuggestions for future research.This study mainly has two limitations.First, the target vowels are not put in the same contexts because of thelimitation of the speech corpus. There is no one fixed context designed for vowelacquisition study in the corpus. But this limitation cannot influence the results of thepresent study, as a vowel has the same acoustic values in similar contexts. Besides,the materials this thesis selected are also used by other scholars.Second, the number of native speakers is smaller than that of ChangchunEnglish Learners. There are two groups in this thesis, one is 50 Cc ELs (25 femalesand 25 males), and the other is 16 ANSs (8 females and 8 males). This can partlyexplain why the SD values of two vowels produced by the ANSs are bigger thanthose of Cc ELs. But, these are all speakers available at present. And 16 subjects areenough for this kind of research.This thesis researches Cc ELs’ acquisition of English vowels from the acousticperspective.
